The night outside the sanctuary was still, but inside, the group was restless. The battle had left everyone on edge, their nerves frayed and their tempers short. Alex sat in a corner of the sanctuary, staring at the glowing runes of the seal. The light pulsed faintly, as though alive, a silent reminder of its power and his connection to it.
Ella approached him cautiously, her footsteps light on the cracked stone floor. She carried a small mug of herbal tea, the steam curling upward in delicate spirals. "You should drink this," she said, her voice soft. "It'll help."
Alex glanced up at her, his expression wary but grateful. "Thanks." He took the mug and sipped, the warmth spreading through him like a soothing balm.
Ella sat down beside him, her hands clasped tightly in her lap. For a long moment, neither of them spoke. Finally, Alex broke the silence. "You seem to know a lot about this seal. About me. More than you've told us."
She didn't meet his gaze, her eyes fixed on the glowing runes. "I only know what I was told," she said quietly. "Stories passed down from those who came before me. The seal is ancient, older than humanity itself. It was never meant to be touched, let alone tied to someone like you."
"What does that even mean? " Alex asked, frustration creeping into his voice. "Why me? Why not someone else? "
Ella hesitated, then looked at him with an expression of pity. "Because you were chosen. Not by Lucifer, but by the seal itself. It saw something in you, something it needed."
Alex frowned, her words leaving a bitter taste in his mouth. "And what if I don't want to be chosen? What if I just want to go back to being… me? "
Ella shook her head. "I don't think that's possible anymore."
The Rift Grows
Across the room, Mara and Lila stood near the remnants of the battle, examining one of the shattered creatures. Its form had crumbled into ash, but faint traces of dark energy lingered in the air around it.
"These things weren't just demons," Mara said, her brow furrowed. "They were... corrupted. Twisted into something worse."
Lila nodded, her expression grim. "And they weren't acting on instinct. They were organized and coordinated. Someone sent them."
"Darius? " Mara asked, though she already knew the answer.
"Maybe," Lila said, standing and sheathing her blade. "But I think there's someone—or something—else pulling the strings."
Gideon joined them, his staff resting against his shoulder. "Whatever their purpose, they were after the seal," he said. "And they'll keep coming until they get it."
"Then we need to move," Lila said. "This sanctuary won't hold forever."
Gideon frowned. "We can't just leave. The seal is bound to this place. If Alex leaves, it'll weaken. If the wrong hands get to it."
"Then we're back where we started," Lila interrupted. "I'm not saying we abandon the seal. But staying here is suicide."
Mara crossed her arms, her gaze flicking toward Alex. "If we leave, he's vulnerable. Out there, there are no wards, no protection."
"Then we make our own," Lila said. "We're not helpless. We can figure this out."
Gideon shook his head. "This isn't just about figuring things out. There are forces at work here we barely understand. If we're not careful, we'll play right into their hands."
"And if we do nothing, we're dead," Lila snapped, her voice rising. "You saw those things. They're not going to stop."
"Enough! " Alex's voice rang out, cutting through the argument. He rose to his feet, his gaze hard. "We're not going to get anywhere fighting each other."
The others fell silent, their tension palpable. Alex turned to Gideon. "You said the seal is tied to me. That it reacts to me. Fine. Then I'll stay close to it, but we need to find a way to stop this permanently."
"And how do you propose we do that? " Lila asked, her tone skeptical.
Alex looked at her, his jaw set. "We find Darius. And we make him talk."
Into the Shadows
The decision was made before dawn. The group would leave the sanctuary, taking Ella and the seal's power with them. Gideon created a temporary ward to conceal the altar, though even he admitted it wouldn't hold for long. They needed answers, and Darius was their best lead.
The forest was darker than before, the mist thicker and colder. Every sound seemed amplified, every shadow a potential threat. Alex led the group, his senses heightened by the fragment of Lucifer's power coursing through him. The hellfire simmered beneath his skin, ready to be unleashed at a moment's notice.
They moved in silence, their footsteps muffled by the damp earth. Gideon carried a map, his eyes scanning it as they followed an ancient path toward an abandoned stronghold—a place where they believed Darius might be hiding.
Mara walked beside Alex, her hand brushing against his. "Are you sure about this? " She asked, her voice low.
"No," Alex admitted. "But we don't have a choice."
Ahead of them, Lila suddenly stopped, raising a hand in warning. "Something's wrong," she said, her eyes narrowing as she scanned the trees.
The group froze, their breaths shallow. The air felt different, charged, as though a storm were brewing. Then came the sound of footsteps, slow and deliberate, echoing through the forest.
"Stay close," Alex said, summoning a small flame in his hand. The light flickered, casting long shadows across the trees.
From the darkness emerged a figure, tall and cloaked, their face hidden beneath a hood. The group tensed, weapons drawn, as the figure stopped a few paces away.
"Alex Mercer," the figure said, their voice smooth and cold. "We've been expecting you."
Alex stepped forward, the flame in his hand flaring brighter. "Who are you? "
The figure laughed, a sound that sent shivers down Alex's spine. "Just a messenger. But if you want answers, you'll need to come with me."
"Not a chance," Lila said, her blade gleaming as she stepped between Alex and the stranger.
The figure tilted their head. "You can fight if you'd like. But it won't change anything. The gate is opening, and you're the key."
Alex's blood ran cold. "What gate? "
The figure didn't answer. Instead, they raised a hand, and the forest erupted in chaos. Shadows surged from the ground, twisting into monstrous forms that lunged at the group.
"Protect the seal! " Gideon shouted, his staff blazing with light.
Alex unleashed a wave of hellfire, the flames tearing through the shadow creatures. Beside him, Mara and Lila fought with deadly precision, their movements fluid and coordinated.
But for every creature they defeated, more took its place. The forest seemed alive with darkness, and the figure watched from the edge of the chaos, unmoving.
"Alex! "Ella's voice rang out, her tone urgent. "You have to stop them! Use the seal! "
"I don't know how! " Alex shouted, his frustration mounting.
"Trust it! " Ella cried. "It chose you for a reason! "
Alex hesitated, then closed his eyes, reaching for the connection he felt with the seal. The power surged through him, wild and untamed, but he embraced it, letting it flow.
The ground trembled, and a blinding light erupted from Alex, washing over the forest. The shadow creatures shrieked and dissolved, leaving only silence in their wake.
When Alex opened his eyes, the figure was gone, but their words lingered.
"The gate is opening, and you're the key."
