Northern China, Hebei Province, Shenzhou City — 8:30 PM
The four high school students ran through a city stripped of life, a city consumed by death and despair, after fleeing their school. Tiang watched in horror as squads of Chinese riot police desperately tried to contain the infected of the Naraka Virus. But as soon as the infected swarmed the officers, chaos erupted: the law enforcement forces were slaughtered, torn apart, and devoured—only to rise again as monsters themselves. This scene played out everywhere, but each time, it sent shivers down the spines of those who witnessed it.
In the distance, flames danced—devastating fires swallowing everything in their path. Thousands of corpses seemed to rise into the night sky, as the wind carried ashes through the air. Military helicopters roared overhead, their rotors slicing through the night like ominous specters.
— "This is horrible…"
One of the rescued girls cried out, her voice trembling. Her eyes locked onto a scene that shattered her heart: a desperate father throwing himself off a building, ending his life, while a young girl—bitten—was surrounded by the ravenous dead on a bridge. With no other option, they both leapt into the water, fleeing certain death.
— "Don't look."
Meilin's voice cut through the air, cold as ice.
Tiang suddenly stopped, his hands clutching his chest, struggling to breathe in the face of such horror. He turned toward Meilin, anger boiling within him.
— "Meilin… You should be more sympathetic! At least explain what all of this means!"
He shouted, his furious gaze locking onto hers as he grabbed her collar. The group halted, all eyes turning to them.
— "Tiang…"
Her voice trembled with anger, emotion, and something else—fear. Her cheeks flushed in an instant.
— "I was afraid… Afraid that you'd react like the others and abandon me."
Tiang, caught off guard, felt a pang of guilt. He wanted to say something, but the words stuck in his throat.
— "Idiot… That's not what I meant. I'm talking about what you said to me! You called me 'King,' didn't you?"
He sighed, scratching the back of his head, trying to ease the tension.
Without a word, Meilin resumed running, her steps so fast she blurred into motion. Her speed was almost unnatural.
— "That girl… I swear…"
Tiang muttered, completely thrown off. He couldn't shake the feeling that his strange dreams were somehow connected to all of this… to her. Could it be possible? he wondered.
One of the girls, curious, turned to him.
— "Have you two known each other for a long time?"
She asked, her gaze intrigued as she nudged Tiang teasingly.
— "She was incredible! Did you see what she did? It was like a scene straight out of a shonen anime!"
The second girl exclaimed enthusiastically, her eyes sparkling with admiration. There was a secret fascination in her gaze.
Tiang, slightly flustered, answered with a hint of bitterness.
— "Yeah… since we were kids… Tch… She could've at least told me."
The girls chuckled softly. One of them leaned in with a playful smile.
— "She's afraid you'll abandon her… You guys never seem to understand that!"
She laughed, her teasing tone affectionate.
— "She cares about you, that much is obvious."
