Chapter 29: A Final Rendezvous

Two days before Vasquez's departure, Elena calls me in a panic, voice shaking. "He cornered me, said if I don't fly out with him, he'll freeze all my accounts and 'handle' any loose ends. He said it like a threat, Lucas."

My blood runs cold. We arrange a meeting at a long-closed diner on the outskirts, its parking lot empty. Under flickering fluorescent lights, she sits in her car, engine running. I slip into the passenger seat, adrenaline coursing.

"He's leaving in forty-eight hours," she says, eyes rimmed with tears. "If I don't show up at the airport, he'll know something's up. I'm terrified, Lucas. I don't want to be forced overseas, but I also don't want to vanish alone."

I reach for her hand, my chest tight. "We can't stay. He'll bury us. If you're serious about leaving him, then…" My heart pounds as I swallow the lump in my throat. "I'll come with you. We go off-grid. Tonight. Or tomorrow. Before he can stop us."

Her eyes widen, relief and fear swirling. "Are you sure?"

"No," I admit, shaking with dread. "But it's our only shot."
