Chapter 25: A Warning from HR

The next morning, I arrive at work to find an email from Human Resources requesting an urgent meeting. My heart nearly stops. I shuffle to the HR office, pulse roaring in my ears.

A stern-faced HR manager closes the door behind me. "Lucas, we've had some concerns raised about your interactions with certain senior staff… specifically Mrs. Vasquez. Our policy on workplace boundaries is very clear."

Blood drains from my face. Concerns raised? By who? I stammer a denial, insisting it's all professional. They warn me that any "inappropriate conduct" with family members of the executive board could result in immediate termination.

When I finally escape the HR office, my mind swims. The net is closing in. We're being watched. I text Elena: We have a problem.

She replies almost instantly: I just got the same talk from Adrian. He's suspicious. Or at least controlling me harder. We're out of time.

Chapter 26: A Desperate Plan

We decide to meet after hours in a nearby park, well away from the office or any suspicious eyes. The night is cold, the wind rustling tree branches overhead. Elena paces, arms folded to keep warm.

"HR gave you a warning. Adrian is breathing down my neck. This can't last," she hisses, voice tight with anxiety. "I need to leave this marriage, Lucas. He's planning to take half the staff to Singapore, and he wants me there for show."

My throat constricts. "So you want to… run?"

Her eyes flash. "I've been thinking about it for weeks—stashing some money, figuring out how to vanish." She pauses, studying my face. "But if I do this, it can't just be me alone. I mean… do you want in?"

This is the ultimate WTF question. Abandon my job, risk blacklisting if Vasquez retaliates, plunge into hiding with the boss's wife? My chest tightens. But the thought of losing her to an overseas cage also slams me with fear.

"I—" My voice breaks. "I'm not sure."

She blinks, disappointment flickering. "Well… make up your mind fast. He leaves next Friday."
