Chapter 60: A Rift with the Smugglers

Morning arrives. Ramirez announces plans to separate the convoy—some of his men want to divert to a different route. Zach and Marta intend to stick with us, but tensions flare over money. Elena stands firm, promising the rest of her payment once we reach a stable hideout.

Ramirez's men grumble about her partial funds. One tries to corner Elena, demanding more. I intervene, anger surging. The man shoves me, and we square off. My fists tighten, ready for a fight, but Ramirez steps in, threatening his own man. The power dynamic is precarious—loyalties are bought here, not earned.

Zach advises we slip away soon. "Ramirez is losing patience," he warns, voice low. "And he'll sell you out if a bigger offer lands on his table. Tread carefully."

Elena and I share a worried look. We can't trust these smugglers blindly. We pack up, hearts heavy with the knowledge that we're still not safe. The question burns: how much longer can we rely on borderline mercenaries?
