The sun had set by the time they reached Monowi, Nebraska. The dark silhouette of the town loomed in the distance, its dim streetlights flickering like dying fireflies.
Kara stepped out of the car, the chill of the night air raising goosebumps on her skin. She surveyed the town, unimpressed.
"Seriously, Mom. Imagine leaving New York or Los Angeles for… this." She gestured at the desolate streets, the cracked sidewalks, and the eerie silence that hung over the town.
Debby sighed, stepping out of the car. "Eight years ago, the population of Monowi was one. Now, in 2034, it's about 10,500. It's not so bad, considering it even has a high school and university now."
Kara snorted, slamming the car door shut. "Yeah, no one cares, Mom. This place still looks like a set from a 2001 horror movie."
Debby frowned, gathering their bags. "Honey, I'm doing what's best for us. The rate of cancer in America is on the rise. It's safer in rural towns."
Kara laughed bitterly. "That's some real bullshit. You're only here because your boyfriend lives here, and he's the mayor. Right?"
Her eyes landed on the mansion before them, a grand, towering structure with Gothic architecture. Its windows gleamed under the moonlight like watchful eyes.
"Your gold-digging skills never cease to amaze me, Mom," she added with a smirk.
"Kara!" Debby snapped.
"Admit it. You married Dad for his money. I know I'm not his daughter, so tell me, Mom, who's my real dad?" Kara's voice was sharp, her smirk twisted with malice.
Debby's hands shook as she stepped toward her, her voice trembling. "Kara-"
"Don't." Kara raised her hand, stopping her mother mid-step.
The mansion door creaked open, and a tall figure stepped out. His dark hair curled around his jawline, framing a sharp face with piercing forest-green eyes.
His lips were set in a hard line, and his expression screamed disinterest.
Kara's breath caught as his gaze met hers briefly before sliding away, his steps deliberate and graceful as he approached them.
There was something off about him.
"Welcome, Miss Debby. I'm here to pick up your bags," he said, his voice deep and even.
Kara watched him, her heart pounding. She wasn't sure what Monowi was hiding, but she had a sinking feeling she was about to find out.
