Chapter 13: unforgiven

Her mother's face was a mask of fury, but she said nothing.

"Mum?" Kara asked hesitantly.

Debby raised a hand, silencing her. "You're grounded," she said curtly before walking out.

"I just bought that car last week," Rox said, fists clenched.

"I'm sorry," Kara muttered, guilt churning in her stomach.

"No, you're not," he snapped. "What the hell happened?"

"I was attacked by wolves, and some guy saved me, how did I even get here?" she asked, running her fingers through her curls.

"You walked home," Rai said casually from the couch, cracking open a soda.

"That's not right, I passed out," Kara insisted.

"When? Before or after you crashed Rox's car?" Gen asked flatly.

"I didn't crash it!" she protested. "I was attacked by wolves!"

Rai, Gen, and Sila exchanged skeptical glances.

"There are no wolves in Monowi," Sila said, her tone cold.

"Are you saying I'm lying?" Kara's voice rose in disbelief.

"Yes, you are," Gen replied bluntly.

Kara shot to her feet, wobbling slightly. Rox moved to steady her, but she shoved him off.

"Don't touch me! Why would I lie about something like that?"

"Because you're a spoiled brat without a license who can't admit to crashing Rox's car," Gen snapped.

"I didn't crash it! I ran out of fuel, got lost, and couldn't call because my phone died! I was attacked!" Kara cried, her voice breaking.

Oron stepped forward, his tone calm but firm. "Kara, Monowi is safe. I made sure of it before I built this town. There are no wolves here."

"Then explain the cracked windshield!" she shot back.

"Enough!" Rox yelled. "Wolves or not, just admit you wrecked my car!"

Kara scoffed, her anger bubbling over. "I can't apologize for something I didn't do. You know what? Screw all of you, I'm done!"

"You're not going anywhere," Debby said, blocking the door. "You're grounded for making us search the entire city yesterday. Apologize to Rox now."

Hands trembling, Kara stared at the floor. "I'm sorry for bashing your car, Rox," she muttered through gritted teeth.

She stormed upstairs, slamming the door. Burying her face in a pillow, she screamed in frustration.

"Damn them all," she sobbed, sulking for hours.

Had she imagined it? Were there really no wolves?

The sound of a tow truck interrupted her thoughts. Peeking out the window, she saw Rox's Lamborghini being towed. The cracked windshield caught her eye.

Her gaze met Rox's furious glare. Heart racing, she yanked the curtains shut.
