chapter 27:The fever

Headaches should be illegal. Kara groaned; her body ached like crazy. Her temperature was a whole other degree.

Her door flew open, startling her. "You're still in bed!" her mom yelled, and Kara instinctively held her head.

"It's 7:30 a.m.! Why are you still..." Debby paused, noticing her feet. "What happened to your feet?" she shrieked in horror.

Rushing to Kara's bedside, she placed a cold palm on her forehead. "Goodness, you are burning up," Debby panicked.

Getting on her feet, or heels, she went to get the first aid kit, rolling up her sleeves. She picked up a forceps with cotton wool she dipped in antiseptic.

"Mum, you don't have to..."

"...sssss," Kara hissed as it stung. "Worry," she winced.

Debby gave her an annoyed glare. "Don't resort to self-harming just because I sent you to school to get a better life for yourself."

"I'm not self-harming, Mom," Kara drawled, trying to heat herself up as she shivered.

Debby's lips pressed in a thin line. "Then tell me why you have bruises on your feet, Kara."

Closing her eyes, Kara fought an internal battle with herself, debating whether to tell her mom about Rox forgetting her or just shut her mouth.

After a long silence, Debby shook her head. "Oh, I get it." Her mom was smart, she was sure she'd figure it out in seconds.

"He left you, didn't he?" Debby said in a calm, placid voice, her usual calm before a storm.

Lie. She definitely had to lie. Struggling to sit up, she shook her head, then regretted it. "No, Mom, that's not it," she tried to argue.

Sighing in frustration, Debby held her temples. "Stay home today. I will send some hot soup, and you should take some fever drugs and painkillers, there should be some in the drawer to your left. Don't go anywhere today, understood, young lady?"

Kara nodded as the door closed behind her. Staring at the ceiling, she sighed. "It's a damn Friday on a Tuesday, and I don't even have to pretend to be sick. I feel like shit," she groaned, burying herself under her blanket.
