Warmth enveloped Naruto like a blanket woven from sunlight, a sensation so gentle it felt alien after the cold void of death. His consciousness stirred, sluggish at first, as if waking from a dream too vivid to shake. Sunlight? Am I… home? The thought flickered through his mind, but his body jolted—running, leaping, out of his control. His soul thrummed, merging with flesh that wasn't still, wasn't resting. Where am I?
A voice broke through the haze—his own, sharp with urgency. "Kiba, how's it going?"
Naruto's heart skipped. He knew that tone, that anxious edge. Then came the reply, gruff and focused: "I'm tracking Sasuke's scent—faint, but it's there. Don't bug me, Naruto, or I'll lose it!"
Kiba. The name hit him like a thunderclap. Naruto's memories surged, flipping like pages in a worn book, until they locked onto a moment: the hunt for Sasuke after the Five Kage Summit. This was it—the time the Sage of Six Paths had hurled him back to. His soul snapped fully into place, and in that instant, his body faltered. One moment he was mid-leap through the forest, the next he plummeted, a puppet with cut strings.
"Naruto!" Kakashi's shout pierced the air. A blur of silver hair and a strong arm caught him just before he hit the dirt, easing him to the ground. Leaves crunched beneath them, the scent of earth and pine flooding Naruto's senses as his team gathered around.
Sakura's voice trembled with worry. "What's wrong with him?" She knelt beside him, her green eyes wide, hands already glowing with medical chakra. Kakashi, still cradling Naruto, shook his head. "He was fine a second ago—then he just dropped."
"Let me check him," Sakura said, her tone shifting to the calm precision Tsunade had drilled into her. She pressed her palms to Naruto's chest, chakra pulsing as she scanned him. Behind her, Hinata hovered, her pale eyes shimmering with fear, hands clasped tightly. Shino stood silent, his insects buzzing faintly, while Kiba and Akamaru tilted their heads in confusion. Yamato, ever the steady captain, watched with furrowed brows.
Inside, Naruto's soul wrestled with his teenage body, threads of memory and will stitching together. He felt Sakura's hands, the rhythm of her CPR, and then—awareness. His eyes flew open just as Kiba leaned in, lips pursed for artificial respiration, his face a mix of reluctance and duty.
"K-Kiba?!" Naruto yelped, jerking upright. Kiba's eyes popped open, meeting Naruto's in a mortifying clash. He sprang back, flailing. "Whoa, whoa, hold up! Sakura told me to do it—nobody else would! I wasn't gonna enjoy it, I swear!"
Naruto scrambled to his feet, brushing off dirt as laughter bubbled up despite himself. He glanced down—his body, younger, leaner, not yet scarred by the wars to come. Sixteen, maybe less. Alive. Really alive. His gaze swept the team, and emotion crashed over him like a tidal wave.
Kakashi rose, adjusting his headband with a relieved grin. "You scared us, kid. What happened back there?"
Naruto didn't answer. He lunged, wrapping Kakashi in a bone-crushing hug. "Sensei!" Tears spilled hot and fast, soaking Kakashi's vest. In his future, Kakashi had died shielding him from an Ōtsutsuki blast—gray hair matted with blood, a final smile as he fell. Now, feeling that heartbeat, that warmth, Naruto sobbed harder. "You're here… you're really here…"
Kakashi froze, then patted Naruto's back awkwardly. "Uh, yeah, I'm here. Ease up, okay? We've still got Sasuke to catch." His tone was light, but his visible eye softened with concern.
Naruto pulled back, wiping his face with his sleeve, and turned to Sakura. She glared, hands on hips. "You jerk! You drop out of nowhere and scare us half to death—what's your deal?" Her words were sharp, but her relief was palpable.
"Sakura!" Naruto's voice cracked with joy. He stepped toward her, but she waved him off, muttering about "idiots who don't know how to stay upright." He grinned—same old Sakura, fierce and caring all at once.
His eyes darted to the others. "Shino! Yamato! Kiba, you weirdo—quit babbling! Akamaru, c'mere, buddy!" He ruffled the dog's fur, laughing as Akamaru barked happily. Each name, each face, was a lifeline pulling him from the abyss of loss. They were alive—all of them.
Sakura sidled up to Kakashi, whispering, "Did you really catch him, Sensei? He's acting like he hit his head pretty hard."
Kakashi scratched his neck, chuckling nervously. "Pretty sure I did. Ninety-nine percent?"
Before Sakura could press further, Naruto's gaze landed on Hinata. She stood apart, her soft voice barely audible. "Naruto-kun… I'm so glad you're okay…" Her fingers twisted together, her cheeks pink with worry.
Time slowed. Naruto saw her as she'd been in his last moments—lifeless, shielding Boruto from Kawaki's attack, her gentle strength extinguished. Now, here she was, alive, fragile yet unbroken. His heart roared. Without a word, he closed the distance, pulled her into his arms, and kissed her.
It wasn't tentative or shy. It was desperate, fierce, a collision of past and present. Hinata gasped against his lips, her body stiffening in shock, but then her eyes fluttered shut. She melted into him, hands clutching his jacket as tears slipped down her face, mirroring his own.
The team gaped. Kiba's jaw dropped, Akamaru whining in confusion. Shino's sunglasses glinted as he tilted his head. Yamato coughed, looking anywhere but at them. Kakashi's eye widened, his hand hovering over his book. "Okay, I'm officially not sure I caught him. Brain damage might explain this."
Sakura's face flushed crimson, then twisted with fury. "Naruto, you pervert! Let her go!" She stormed forward, fist cocked, chakra flaring. The punch came fast, aimed at his head—but Naruto caught it.
His hand closed around her wrist, steady and firm. He held Hinata close with his other arm, her warmth grounding him as he met Sakura's glare. "I'm sorry, Sakura," he said, voice low, thick with regret. "I can't let you hit me anymore. Not after everything."
Sakura blinked, fury faltering. "What… what are you talking about?" Her arm slackened, confusion replacing anger.
Naruto released her, stepping back but keeping Hinata near. His eyes, older than his years, swept over them all. "You don't get it yet. But you will. I'm back—for all of you." His voice trembled with conviction, a promise forged in loss and reborn in this moment.
The forest stilled, the weight of his words hanging unspoken. Sasuke's trail waited, but for now, Naruto stood among his family, their bonds a lifeline he'd fight to protect. Whatever came next, he'd face it with them—starting here, now.
