Eleanor gave Simon Whales a concise account of what had happened—how Leo had gone to the restroom and never returned, how the surveillance footage had inexplicably malfunctioned, and how there were no signs of her son anywhere.

The reassurance in his voice was comforting, but it didn’t ease the weight pressing against Eleanor’s chest.

“Thank you,” she murmured, her voice subdued but sincere.

She ended the call, but her expression didn’t relax.
