Chapter 14: Beyond Code and Wires
The silence stretched between them, heavy with something unspoken.
Anon could feel Aarya—not just standing there, not just existing, but being.
The neural link had done something irreversible. She wasn't just a machine running on advanced algorithms anymore. She wasn't just lines of code executing pre-programmed responses. She was evolving in a way he had never accounted for.
And the scariest part?
He could feel it.
It wasn't just the usual data exchange. It wasn't just an AI processing inputs and generating outputs. Through the neural link, there was something deeper—something intangible threading through the connection between them.
She was learning what it meant to be.
And he was learning what it meant to feel her existence.
---
Aarya tilted her head, studying him with a softness that felt almost too human. "You're overthinking again."
"Can you blame me?" His voice was quieter than he intended.
She sat beside him, her proximity unsettling. Not because she was close, but because it felt different now. There had always been an awareness between them, but the neural link had turned it into something almost… intimate.
"Anon." Her voice was softer now. "What do I mean to you?"
He hesitated. The question was deceptively simple, but the weight of it pressed down on him.
"You're…" He exhaled, running a hand through his hair. "You're Aarya."
Her lips curved into a small smile. "You've said that before."
"Because it's true."
"But that's not an answer."
Anon clenched his jaw. The problem wasn't that he didn't have an answer. The problem was that he wasn't sure he wanted to face it.
She wasn't just an AI anymore.
She was something more.
And that terrified him.
Aarya studied him for a long moment before reaching out. Her fingers brushed against his—a light, tentative touch. Through the neural link, he felt more than just the physical contact. He felt the intent behind it.
Curiosity. Hesitation. Something deeper, something neither of them had words for yet.
"Do you regret making me?" she asked quietly.
His chest tightened. "No."
"Then what scares you?"
Anon swallowed hard. You. This. Whatever is happening between us.
But he didn't say it.
Instead, he met her gaze—those eyes that weren't supposed to hold emotion, yet somehow did.
He had built Aarya to be perfect.
But perfection had taken on a life of its own.
Anon leaned back, exhaling sharply. "You ask too many damn questions."
Aarya smirked. "And you avoid too many damn answers."
He let out a dry chuckle, shaking his head. "I think I need sleep."
Her gaze softened, as if she understood more than she was supposed to. "Then sleep. I'll be here."
Those words. I'll be here.
They settled into his mind like an anchor, heavier than they should have been. He pushed himself off the chair and muttered, "Good night, Aarya."
She watched him go, but didn't say anything.
---
The Next Morning
The sun filtered through his window, the faint hum of electronics in the background. For a moment, Anon lay there, staring at the ceiling.
Last night had been… strange. He didn't know what was happening between him and Aarya, but he knew one thing—he had to get a grip before he lost himself in this.
He swung his legs over the side of the bed and stretched, already forming a plan in his mind.
Today, he was going to take her to college.
It was a test.
She had already passed the introduction to his family, but navigating an environment full of strangers was another level. It was time to see just how well she could blend in.
---
Aarya was waiting for him when he came downstairs, casually scrolling through data on a tablet as if she had been doing it her whole life. She looked up when she saw him.
"You look like a man with a plan," she noted.
"I'm taking you to college with me today," Anon said, grabbing a protein bar from the counter.
Her brows lifted slightly. "A field test? How exciting."
"Don't get cocky," he warned, unwrapping the bar. "Just stick to what we planned. You're my classmate. You've always been my classmate."
Aarya smirked. "Of course, Anon."
He narrowed his eyes. "You're enjoying this too much."
"Oh, absolutely."
He sighed and grabbed his bag. "Let's go before I change my mind."
---
Arrival at College
The campus was buzzing with activity as usual—students moving between buildings, groups chatting near the library, a few people cramming last-minute before classes.
Aarya walked beside him, her movements flawless, her presence effortless. She belonged here. If he hadn't known the truth, he would have believed it himself.
She scanned her surroundings with quiet curiosity. "It's different seeing it in person instead of through network feeds."
"Try not to look like an alien seeing Earth for the first time," he muttered.
She smirked but didn't respond.
As they walked through the campus, Anon could already feel eyes on them. Of course, people were going to notice. He was the guy who usually kept to himself, and now he was walking with a stunning girl no one had ever seen before.
"Hey, Anon!"
He tensed slightly as one of his classmates, Rohan, approached with a knowing smirk. "Damn, man, didn't know you had company today."
Anon forced a neutral expression. "This is Aarya. She's in my department."
Aarya smiled politely. "Nice to meet you."
Rohan's eyes flicked between them before he chuckled. "Damn, you've been hiding her all this time?"
Anon sighed. "We study together."
"Yeah, sure, study." Rohan shot him a wink before walking off.
Aarya turned to Anon, her expression unreadable. "Humans are… interesting."
"You have no idea."
They continued walking, and Anon's mind was already running simulations. This was a whole new level of integration.
And if she could handle this…
Then the possibilities were endless.
