CHAPTER FOUR: POLICE INVESTIGATION

Chapter 4: Police Investigation

Officer Jenkins sat at his desk, sipping his coffee and staring at the report in front of him. The accident on Main Street had been a bad one, and he had a feeling that it was going to be a complicated case.

He looked up as Lena Grant and her father, John, walked into the security office. Lena's eyes were red-rimmed, and her face was etched with worry.

"Officer Jenkins," John Grant said, extending his hand. "We're here to give our statements."

Officer Jenkins nodded and stood up, shaking John's hand. "Of course, Mr. Grant. Please, have a seat."

As Lena and her father sat down, Officer Jenkins pulled out a notebook and pen. "Can you tell me what happened?" he asked Lena.

Lena took a deep breath before speaking. "I wasn't there when the accident happened," she said. "But my brother Alex was driving home from work, and...and Sarah Taylor ran into him."

Officer Jenkins nodded, his expression sympathetic. "I see. And can you tell me more about your brother's condition?"

Lena's eyes welled up with tears. "He's in critical condition," she said, her voice shaking. "The doctors say he has a long road to recovery."

Officer Jenkins nodded again, his expression grim. "I'm so sorry to hear that," he said. "We'll do everything we can to investigate this accident and make sure that justice is served."

As Officer Jenkins continued to question Lena and her father, Sarah Taylor sat in the corner of the room, watching them with tears in her eyes. She knew that she had made a terrible mistake, and she was willing to do whatever it took to make it right.

But as she listened to Lena's angry words, Sarah couldn't help but feel a pang of fear. What would happen to her now? Would she go to jail?

Officer Jenkins finished questioning Lena and her father, and then he turned to Sarah. "Miss Taylor," he said, his voice firm. "I need to ask you some questions."

Sarah nodded, feeling a sense of trepidation. "Okay," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

Officer Jenkins pulled out his notebook again. "Can you tell me what happened?" he asked Sarah.

Sarah took a deep breath before speaking. "I was driving home from a party," she said. "I had been drinking, and...and I think I might have fallen asleep at the wheel."

Officer Jenkins' expression turned skeptical. "You think you might have fallen asleep at the wheel?" he repeated.

Sarah nodded, feeling a wave of shame wash over her. "Yes," she said. "I'm so sorry. I never meant for this to happen."

Officer Jenkins sighed, his expression grim. "Miss Taylor, you're going to need to come down to the station with me," he said. "We'll need to take a formal statement from you, and...and we'll need to discuss the possibility of charges being filed."

Sarah felt a cold dread creeping up her spine. Charges? What kind of charges?

As Officer Jenkins stood up and handcuffed her, Sarah knew that her life was about to change forever.
