Vale's boots hit the rocky ground as he sprinted toward the next position. Explosions had shattered the calm of the camp, sending tremors through the air. The rebel ambush was more than just an attack—it was a message. But who was sending it, and why?
With Zane's drones providing tactical overlays and real-time intel, they pushed through the smoke and debris. The night was alive with the sound of gunfire and the distant rumble of artillery. It wasn't just the rebels they were fighting. The team was up against a more insidious force—one that had been hiding in plain sight.
"Doc, how much further?" Vale shouted over the roar of incoming fire.
"Not far," Doc replied, his voice tight as he ducked behind a stone pillar, scanning for injured civilians. "We've got to get through this street. Then it's just a matter of securing the intel and getting the hell out."
Vale nodded grimly. They were far from their extraction point, but they had no choice. The rebel leadership needed to be dealt with, and the data they were carrying was crucial to stopping a new wave of rebellion. If they failed, this chaos would spread like wildfire.
"Zane, update," Vale ordered.
"Intel is showing some unusual movement near the eastern flank," Zane said, his fingers flying over his handheld controller. "It's like they're preparing something—reinforcements or a trap. I don't like it."
"Keep eyes on it," Vale said, voice steady but his mind racing. "We move fast. Get to the intel point, and secure it. We'll deal with the rest later."
The team pushed forward, moving in unison, using the cover of smoke and fallen debris to shield their movements. They reached the decrepit building housing the intel just as a distant explosion rattled their earpieces.
"Dammit, they're closing in," Zane cursed.
"Just keep moving," Vale snapped. "We're almost there."
Inside the building, the dim light from a malfunctioning generator flickered. The air was thick with dust, and the smell of burnt plastic filled the room. The intel storage device was hidden in a reinforced case, sitting atop a metal desk in the center of a small office.
Doc moved quickly, his hands steady as he disabled the security systems and connected the device to his portable terminal. His fingers flew over the keys as encrypted data streamed into the device.
"We've got it," Doc said, a grin spreading across his face. "Now we just need to get out of here."
Vale was about to respond when the telltale sound of footsteps echoed down the hallway. Rebel fighters were closing in fast, and the building was about to be overrun.
"Zane, get the drones in position," Vale ordered. "Prepare for extraction!"
Zane immediately moved toward the shattered window, his drones whirring as they positioned themselves for an aerial assault. He gestured to Vale, signaling that the air was clear for now.
"Doc, Zane, secure the rear exit," Vale commanded. "Kiera, Zero, we need eyes on the front."
The team moved quickly, taking positions inside the building's fractured walls. They could hear the rebel soldiers shouting orders as they approached. The ambush had just escalated from a skirmish to an all-out battle.
Suddenly, a voice crackled over Vale's earpiece. It was General Sokolov again, his tone colder than ever.
"Vale, the mission hasn't changed," Sokolov's voice was sharp. "You need to extract with the intel. We've been tracking the rebel movements. There's an enemy faction aligned with them. You're dealing with more than just local insurgents."
Vale's eyes narrowed as the words sunk in. "What the hell do you mean?"
"You'll find out soon enough," Sokolov replied. "We're getting reports of a player with heavy interests in this conflict. Finish your job. Don't fail."
The transmission cut off abruptly, leaving Vale with more questions than answers. An international player? What was Sokolov hiding?
"We need to move," Kiera's voice crackled over the comms. "We've got incoming from the front."
Vale turned to Doc, who was still working on securing the data. "Hurry it up, Doc. We don't have time."
"I'm almost there, just a few more—" Doc began, but was cut off by a deafening explosion that rocked the building. Debris rained down from above, and the walls groaned under the pressure.
Vale immediately signaled for the team to fall back. They had to extract now.
"Go, go, go!" Vale yelled.
Zane's drones launched from their positions, diving into the chaos to clear a path as the team retreated through the building's back corridors. Rebel soldiers flooded into the building's front, engaging in a deadly firefight with the team.
Kiera's rifle barked as she dropped two rebels from a distance, providing the cover the team needed. Zero moved swiftly through the darkness, a shadow amongst shadows, his suppressed rifle eliminating threats with deadly precision.
They reached the rear exit just as the building shuddered again from another explosion. Zane's drones were ahead of them, creating a path through the thick smoke and rubble. The extraction point was close now.
But as they rounded the corner, they found themselves face-to-face with an unexpected figure—General Sokolov, accompanied by a team of heavily armed soldiers.
"General?" Vale demanded, his voice filled with disbelief.
Sokolov's cold eyes scanned the team before locking onto Vale. "I see you've made it this far," he said, his voice calm, almost predatory. "But your mission is far from over."
Before Vale could respond, Sokolov's men moved in, securing the area with military precision. The team was surrounded, weapons raised.
"You've done well, Major," Sokolov said, his lips curling into a thin smile. "But the real work is just beginning. You're going to help us finish what we started."
Vale's mind raced. This wasn't what he had expected. Sokolov was no longer their ally—he had played them all along.
With a calculated move, Vale signaled for his team to prepare for anything. They were trapped, but they weren't out of options yet.
The fight was far from over.
