Vale sat at the small table, surrounded by the flickering lights of his encrypted display. His eyes were glued to the screen, scanning through a labyrinth of data files, each one more cryptic than the last. The Hidden Hand. It was the name he had heard whispered in the darkest corners of his intelligence sources for years, but until now, it had been nothing more than a ghost. A shadow.
"Any luck with that data, Zero?" Vale asked without looking up, his voice steady, but tinged with a growing sense of frustration.
Zero was sitting across from him, hunched over a tablet, his brow furrowed as he worked. "It's a mess, Vale. This is worse than trying to find a needle in a haystack. Whoever these people are, they're good. They've buried everything deep."
Kiera, standing nearby, crossed her arms and leaned against the wall. "So, what now? We've been chasing dead ends for days. Maybe this 'Hidden Hand' is just another myth. A boogeyman to keep people in line."
Vale finally looked up from the screen, his expression cold, eyes hard. "No, it's not a myth. I've seen their influence. It's everywhere. Governments, corporations… they control it all from the shadows. Whoever they are, they've been manipulating world events for decades."
Doc, who had been silently observing the exchange, leaned in from behind Vale. "You're telling me we've been running around, jumping from one lead to another, and it all points back to some faceless group pulling the strings like puppeteers?"
Vale nodded, his jaw tight. "Exactly. And if we don't find them now, it'll be too late. They're on the verge of putting their final plan into motion."
Zero looked up from his tablet, his face grim. "Then we need to hit them fast. We can't wait for them to make the next move. If they're as deep as you say, we'll need to hit hard."
"I agree," Kiera said, her voice unwavering. "But we need intel. You're right, Vale. We don't even know who we're really up against."
Vale stood up abruptly, his chair scraping against the floor. "We find the Hidden Hand. We destroy their operation before they destroy everything we've worked for."
"Do you have a lead?" Doc asked, his tone practical, as always.
Vale paused for a moment, his gaze moving across the team. "We've got a contact. A former operative who has information on the Hand. He's hiding out in the city. He's been in deep cover for years, but he's our best shot at getting intel on their next move."
Kiera raised an eyebrow. "We trust him?"
Vale gave a small, tight smile. "Not really. But right now, we don't have a choice."
The team quickly suited up and headed for their transport. They had no time to waste. As the dropship lifted off and they streaked across the sky, Zero's fingers danced over his console, tracking the location of the contact.
"We're going in hot," Zero muttered under his breath, eyes scanning the schematics of the area. "There's an anomaly in the security grid. They're aware of us already. I don't like it."
Vale's voice was calm, but there was an edge to it. "They won't be expecting us to come in from the underground. Zero, do your thing. We don't want a repeat of last time."
Zero smirked. "Don't worry, I've got this. No alarms, no detection. Just like we planned."
Doc tightened the grip on his weapon, his eyes narrowed. "I don't care what happens in the next few minutes, but if we walk into a trap, I want you all to know this is why I don't trust contacts."
Vale turned to him, his face serious. "We don't have a choice. If we don't take the risk, we lose. Understand?"
Doc didn't reply immediately. Instead, he grunted and nodded, a tacit acknowledgment that he would follow Vale's orders as always.
As the team descended into the heart of the city, the dim lights of abandoned streets cast eerie shadows. They moved quickly, silently, through the narrow alleys and forgotten roads. Their target was just ahead, but something didn't feel right.
"Eyes open," Vale muttered, his voice a soft command. "We're in hostile territory. Expect resistance at any moment."
The sound of footsteps echoed through the dark alleyway. At first, it was just a whisper, but then it grew louder. There was no time to react as they were ambushed by a group of heavily armed mercenaries, moving with military precision.
"Shit!" Kiera cursed, ducking behind cover and firing her rifle. "I thought you said we were clear, Zero!"
"I didn't—" Zero started, but the enemy fire cut off his response. He scrambled, pulling up the map on his console. "I don't understand… They weren't supposed to be here!"
Vale was already taking charge. "Zero, get us a way out. Kiera, Doc, cover me."
Doc didn't hesitate. He swung his rifle around, targeting the mercenaries and picking them off one by one. Kiera's quick reflexes kept her in the fight, firing back with deadly precision.
"Keep moving!" Vale shouted, signaling them to regroup. "We need to get to Novak before this turns into a full-scale firefight."
The fight intensified as they pushed forward, making their way through the maze of alleyways, keeping their heads low. The Hidden Hand's mercenaries were relentless, but the team was determined.
Vale, with his back pressed against the wall, kept an eye on the moving targets. "Just a little farther," he said through gritted teeth. "We're almost there."
Finally, they reached the building Novak had been hiding in. Zero was already hacking the entry system, and the door slid open with a low hum. The team piled inside, quickly securing the area.
"Clear," Zero reported, his breathing heavy.
As the team moved deeper into the building, Vale stopped at the doorway. "Alright, let's get what we need. Novak better have the answers we're looking for."
Doc gave him a dark look. "Or we'll make him talk."
They entered the dimly lit room where Novak waited, his silhouette barely visible against the backdrop of data screens. "About time you showed up," Novak's voice echoed in the darkness.
Vale's eyes narrowed. "We've got no time for small talk. Tell me what you know about the Hidden Hand. Where are they?"
Novak stepped forward, an eerie smile spreading across his face. "You've got no idea what you're up against, Vale. But I can help you... for a price."
"Tell me everything," Vale demanded.
Novak's eyes flickered briefly, but he didn't break eye contact. "First, we deal with the people who sent you here."
