It Worked

Complete and utter chaos.

From Sebastian's point of view, that was the only way he could've possibly described the ensuing battle. An absolutely absurd display of immense proportions.

Just what the hell was going on?!

The moment Joshua had been flung from the apartment, both he and Vulcan had rushed into action. The latter, no longer needing to remain on the apartment balcony, shifted the entire area into a massive boulder.

The strange object was horrifying, to say the least—complete with steel, stone, wood, and whatever other materials the area of the apartment had been composed of.

Vulcan herself rode on the surface of the boulder, a toothy grin peering down at the recovering Joshua, as if mocking the difference in their positions.

Unsurprisingly, Joshua didn't take kindly to her mockery. Which is exactly what she wanted.

"Don't look down on me, Star!"

Pressing his palm against the ground, Joshua's gaze suddenly became several times colder. Mere moments after contact, the surface was completely obliterated.

It was as if a meteor had crashed down onto Earth, rending apart Pluto's surface and launching massive groups of debris in the direction of his two opponents.

Sebastian, who'd leapt from the balcony before Vulcan created the boulder, looked at the scene with a confusing mix of awe and terror. Nevertheless, now was the perfect opportunity for him to play his role.

His heartbeat quickened, hot blood rushing through his veins as adrenaline made its way through his brain—all terror that plagued him prior became dampened as his resolve steeled in preparation for his own counterattack.

Or well, perhaps 'attack' wasn't the right term.

Summoning the Sphinx and Wheel, Sebastian turned to face Joshua. As if understanding his silent communication, a wide, inhuman smile spread across the Sphinx's visage. Had he had the time to actually look at it, Sebastian would've been utterly terrified of the uncanny expression.

Of course, he didn't. He could barely prevent himself from being pulverized by the blocks of debris. Regardless, he didn't stall.

The wheel spun. Then it spun again. And again. And again.

Over and over the wheel monotonously turned. Immediately after one spin was complete, another soon took place—a constant, never ending sequence of causality began to spread across the area.

Various panels filled the air around him, only visible in his peripherals.

[Bad Spin: Fortune looks upon…]

[Neutral Spin: Fortune looks upon…]

[Neutral Spin: Fortune looks upon…]

Their messages were irrelevant, all that mattered was that he caused as much chaos as feasibly possible.

And that was exactly what he did.

The Lower District was riddled with 'variables'. An unfortunate malpractice here, a deteriorating structure there. Perhaps in the Upper District, a plan like this would've been much less effective—or far more catastrophic—considering its conditions.

But in this place, forgotten by society? It was practically a gold mine for his ability.

Vulcan commanded the stone sphere to retreat, allowing Sebastian's fortune to burst into effect. All around them, catastrophe after catastrophe began to slowly overwhelm Joshua's flurry of debris.

First, it was a street lamp that'd been on the verge of collapse. Then a car that'd been leaking fuel—causing a miniscule explosion. The unfortunate circumstances began to stack on top of one another like a terrifying tower, gazing down at Joshua as if predicting his inevitable failure.

Of course, Sebastian was out of the woods either. Considering many of the endless spins had revolved around poor fortune. That was Vulcan's job.

From the sphere, liquified earth formed a defensive barrier around Sebastian. Barely protecting him against the onslaught of chaos.

Simultaneously, Vulcan threw her hand outward. Commanding the sphere to unleash a hail of stony tendrils upon Joshua. The strange appendages slithered about the area like grotesque reptiles, each locked onto his position.

Some came from his rear, others his sides, many at his front. But regardless of whatever position they targeted, there was simply too much going on for him to evade the attacks.

So he didn't.

In fact, there was absolutely no stress on the prideful man's face. If anything, he seemed almost amused by their pointless display of camaraderie.

The corner of his lips curled upward, "So even the Star has made a friend, good for her."

Clapping his hands, he once again summoned the strange anthropomorphic puppy. It seemingly appeared from golden light, its actual source unknown.

One thing had become clear though, it was integral for the plan.

The pup glared at Joshua, but said nothing. Instead, it waved its paws in the air and unleashed a torrent of strange golden glitter at everything in the area.

To be frank, the scene was awfully comedic. Seeing a devastating amalgamation of various objects which had somehow found their way either toward Joshua or Sebastian become covered in glitter was…something.

Vulcan smiled, and why wouldn't she? This was exactly what she wanted.

As soon as the glitter had made its way onto its final target, Joshua's luck kicked into action.

But there was too much to defend against.

Too many factors were at play, and not enough solutions to be feasibly possible. Sure, his luck was supernatural—able to create effects that'd never be plausible otherwise in order to keep him alive—but it wasn't omnipotent.

The only way to actually keep him unharmed from the looming threat would've been to teleport him out of the area. And for obvious reasons, that was impossible.

So it didn't focus on keeping him unharmed, just keeping him alive was enough.

Without warning, one of the pieces of debris originating from his own attack broke into two. One piece continued toward its original trajectory, Sebastian. But the other was flung backward.

Before he could even process it, Joshua was hit directly in the temple by a stone twice the size of his head. Alas, his durability would keep him from actually being severely injured, but being stunned wasn't out of the question.

Somehow, Sebastian could feel Vulcan's gaze on him from beneath the barrier. Better yet, he felt as if he understood exactly what she wanted to say.

'It worked!'

The melodious spinning continued, although now it seemed as if it'd been going even faster than ever before.

Because now, there was a chance at victory. And the duo had every intention to grasp it.
