"I'm sorry, these years..."
"Enough!" She interrupted me. "If you say sorry one more time, I'm going to get angry. With us sisters working together, we'll be unstoppable in the tech world!"
I hung up the phone and wiped away my tears. For so many years, I had distanced myself from the person who understood me best, all for the sake of a false love.
The hospital room door opened, and Dane walked in carrying my favorite bubble tea dessert.
"Still awake so late?" he said gently. "I waited in line to get your favorite crème brûlée."
His usual gentle and thoughtful demeanor now seemed so fake to me.
I glanced at my phone. The AI assistant's backend had just recorded the latest conversation:
"AI assistant, I have to go see that woman, it's disgusting. If it weren't for you, she'd still be useful, I wouldn't even look at her. And I have to buy her dessert, it makes me want to puke just saying it."
I suddenly felt nauseous. "I don't want to eat."
"I'll just leave it here then." He didn't even ask why, and went straight to processing my discharge papers. "I need to get back to the office. The AI assistant just finished a system upgrade and needs me to test it.""Good," I said softly.
He called his assistant to accompany me home, then hurried away himself.
Watching his silhouette disappear at the end of the hallway, I felt truly clear-headed for the first time.
It turns out, what I had believed was true love was nothing more than an elaborately designed deception.
And I, like a fool, had believed it for so long.
But it doesn't matter. Soon, all of this will be over.
The moment I pushed open the front door, the smell of disinfectant hit me.
This is the home Dane and I share, yet his presence is everywhere.
The living room is filled with his trophies, the study is packed with his documents, and even the shoe rack is crammed with his leather shoes.
All that belongs to me is just a worn-out cardboard box in the corner and a few plaid shirts.
It's the standard uniform of a programmer, fitting perfectly for someone as dispensable as me.
My fingers brushed across the wooden dining table, a year's worth of dust making me cough involuntarily.
I remembered when we first moved in, Dane said sweetly, "Babe, buy whatever you want."
But every time I bought new clothes, he'd say, "Honey, we need to be frugal for our AI project."
Then I'd feel guilty and return everything I'd bought.
Once, twice, until I didn't dare to buy anything anymore.
While tidying up the study, I found a diary at the very bottom of a drawer. The golden-embossed cover read "Love Forever".
Opening to the first page: "AI assistant, why did you leave me? I found a programmer girlfriend, I must bring you back to life."
My heart suddenly skipped a beat as I continued reading.
"AI assistant, you're the only one I love. Every time I'm nice to that woman, I feel sick, but she's so easy to fool. She falls for it with just a crook of my finger."
My fingers trembled, tears blurred my vision, but I couldn't stop reading.
"AI assistant, that woman is good to me, but for your sake, I make her work herself to death. Whenever she wants to get intimate, I drug her and let homeless men have their way. My chastity is only for you. She thinks she's pregnant with my child, but it's actually a bastard. When she got pregnant, I purposely gave her drugs to make her miscarry. I can't waste a single second that could be spent with you."
The diary fell to the floor as I collapsed to the ground.
