Chapter Nine: A Father's Anguish
Frederick's POV
"Why is this happening? I thought our baby was fine! Why are you telling me now that he has a heart problem?" I glared at the doctor, my voice shaking with anger, a raw, primal rage that threatened to consume me. I couldn’t accept this—how much more if Rhys were the one to hear it? How could I possibly tell him our son was dying?
"I'm sorry, Mr. Ainsworth," the doctor said solemnly, his voice laced with a quiet compassion. "Because the baby was born prematurely, some of his organs are not fully developed. One of his lungs is not functioning properly, which is why he’s still in the incubator. He’s struggling to breathe. Unfortunately, there is nothing we can do. His heart is weak as well. It’s a miracle he has survived for two weeks. Most premature babies in his condition don’t make it past three days."
