Chapter 16: The healing potion

Ethan sat attentively as Instructor Olivia Amber stood at the front of the alchemy classroom, her warm gaze sweeping over the students. The lingering scents of herbs and minerals mixed in the air, making the room feel both mysterious and inviting.

"Today, we will be learning how to craft a basic healing potion," Olivia announced with a smile. "This is one of the most fundamental potions in alchemy, and mastering it will be essential for any of you who plan to pursue magic, medicine, or combat."

A few students perked up at the mention of combat, while others, like Adrian, seemed more relieved that today's lesson wouldn't involve another exam.

Olivia turned to the large blackboard behind her and began writing:

Healing Potion Recipe

Moonleaf Herb (2 leaves) – Enhances the body's natural healing process.

Crushed Sunberry (5 berries) – Provides vitality and replenishes stamina.

Silver Ash Powder (a pinch) – Purifies the mixture and prevents infection.

Springwater (100 ml) – Acts as the base to blend all ingredients smoothly.

Aether Root (one small piece) – Balances the potion's energy to avoid side effects.

She turned back to the class. "Each ingredient plays a crucial role. If you add too much Sunberry, the potion will overstimulate the body, causing exhaustion instead of healing. If you use too little Aether Root, the potion may become unstable, leading to unintended effects. Precision is key in alchemy."

Murmurs spread across the room as students took notes. Ethan listened carefully, comparing Olivia's explanations to what he had learned from the guardians in the forest. Some ingredients were familiar, but the way she described their interactions was something new.

"Now, watch carefully," Olivia continued. She walked over to a large cauldron on her demonstration table and began preparing the potion.

She gently crushed the Moonleaf between her fingers before dropping it into the heated springwater. The water took on a faint golden hue.

Next, she mashed the Sunberries, releasing their vibrant red juice before stirring them in. The liquid deepened in color.

She added the Silver Ash Powder, causing the potion to bubble lightly as it purified.

Finally, she placed the Aether Root in the center, watching as the mixture stabilized into a smooth, glowing red liquid.

She poured the finished potion into a glass vial and held it up for the class to see. "This is the correct result. A well-made healing potion should have a ruby-red color and a faint, herbal scent."

Turning to the students, she clapped her hands. "Now, it's your turn. Use the ingredients on your tables and follow the process carefully. I will come around to evaluate your potions."

Excited whispers spread as the students began their work. Ethan glanced at Adrian and Talia, who both looked determined. He rolled up his sleeves, ready to begin.
