chapter 134: let him

Chapter [X] – The Edge of Discovery

Elias moved through the fortress like a shadow, unseen but always watching.

The soldiers were careful. Too careful.

They spoke in whispers, their voices clipped, their conversations cut short whenever he passed.

But they were hiding something.

And Elias had never been one to walk away from a mystery.

He stayed near the barracks, listening, piecing together fragments of words.

"Too soon—"

"The last one—"

"He'll figure it out—"

Elias's eyes narrowed.

They were talking about him.

He shifted closer, slipping behind a pillar just as two soldiers stepped into view. Their faces were familiar—men who had been in the courtyard that night, who had whispered about "that time of the month."

Elias held his breath.

"You think he knows?" one of them muttered, voice low.

"He's smart," the other said. "Smarter than the last ones. But it doesn't matter. When the time comes, he'll be gone like the rest."

Elias's blood ran cold.

"Gone."

Like the rest.

His hands curled into fists as the truth sank in.

This wasn't just a cycle.

It was an execution.

And he was next.

The Alpha, Elsewhere

A soldier knelt before him, head bowed, voice steady.

"He's been asking questions."

The Alpha exhaled, fingers drumming against his knee.

Of course he had.

Elias was too sharp, too perceptive. He wasn't like the others. He didn't cower, didn't crumble—he searched.

And now?

Now, he was dangerously close to the truth.

The Alpha leaned forward, a slow smile curling at his lips.

"Let him."

The soldier stiffened. "My Lord—"

"Let him dig," the Alpha murmured. "Let him run in circles, let him think he's getting close."

He stood, stretching lazily, amusement glinting in his eyes.

"And when he finally realizes the trap he's walked into—"

His smirk sharpened.

"I'll be there to catch him."
