The Ruins of Orinthal

The journey to Orinthal was rough. The forest thickened around them, the air growing damp and heavy, filled with the scent of moss and ancient wood. No paths. No trails. Just an unrelenting wilderness leading them toward the ruins.

Emma adjusted the strap of her satchel. The Topaz Stone thrummed against her palm, reacting to the energy ahead. "We're getting close."

Rahi exhaled. "Great. Because I think something's watching us."

Emma slowed her steps, listening carefully.

At first—nothing.

Then—a rustling sound. Too deliberate to be the wind.

Rahi unsheathed his dagger. "I swear, if it's another Nightborn—"

A low growl rumbled through the trees.

Not a Nightborn. Something bigger.

Then—movement.

The underbrush exploded, and a massive beast lunged from the shadows.

It had the body of a panther, but its eyes glowed emerald green, and jagged crystals protruded from its spine.

Rahi cursed. "Okay, that's new."

The beast snarled, emerald energy crackling from its fangs.

Emma barely had time to react before it pounced.

The Guardian of Orinthal

Emma rolled to the side, just missing the beast's claws as they sliced through the air.

Rahi threw his dagger, aiming for its flank—but the blade bounced off, repelled by an invisible force.

"The hell?" Rahi muttered.

Emma's mind raced. The Emerald Stone was here. This creature was guarding it.

The ground trembled beneath them, vines snaking from the earth, responding to the beast's power.

Emma gritted her teeth. "We can't fight it head-on!"

Rahi dodged another swipe. "Great! What's the plan, then?"

Emma reached for the Sapphire Stone, feeling its energy surge through her.

She focused—then thrust her palm forward.

A blast of water shot from her hand, slamming into the beast.

The creature staggered, its crystalized fur dampened by the attack.

For a moment, Emma thought she had the upper hand.

Then—the beast absorbed the water.

Its emerald eyes burned brighter.

Emma's breath caught. "That's… not good."

The creature snarled—and suddenly, roots burst from the ground, wrapping around her legs.

She struggled, but the vines tightened, dragging her down.

Rahi lunged forward, slashing at the roots with his dagger. "We are never going into another ruin again!"

The beast prepared to strike.

Emma had seconds to act.

She gripped the Topaz Stone—and for the first time, she let its power take over.

A flash of golden energy erupted from her palm, sparking like lightning.

The vines shriveled instantly.

The beast let out a pained roar, stumbling backward. Its glowing eyes locked onto the Topaz Stone in her hand.

And then—it stopped.

The forest fell silent.

The beast slowly lowered its head.

Rahi blinked. "Uh. Did you just… win?"

Emma stared at the creature. No aggression. Only recognition.

Then she understood.

"It wasn't trying to kill us," she murmured. "It was testing us."

Rahi huffed. "Great. Next time, I'd prefer a written exam."

The ground rumbled.

Behind the beast, the vines parted—revealing a hidden temple entrance.

And at its center, resting on an ancient pedestal—

The Emerald Stone.

Emma took a deep breath.

"Time to claim the next piece of the puzzle."
