I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. Jake's rejection was like a physical blow, leaving me breathless and reeling.
I turned and walked away, trying to hold back tears. But as I reached the safety of the bathroom, I let them flow.
Why had Jake chosen Rachel over me? Didn't he know how much I loved him?
As I cried, I felt a hand on my shoulder. It was Emily, my best friend.
"Mia, I'm so sorry," she said, hugging me tightly. "I had no idea Jake was going to do that."
I shook my head, feeling a wave of despair wash over me. "It's not just Jake," I said. "It's me. I'm not good enough. I'll never be good enough."
Emily looked at me, her eyes filled with concern. "Mia, don't say that," she said. "You're amazing. You're kind, smart, and beautiful. Jake's loss is someone else's gain."
But as I looked at Emily, I knew she was just trying to make me feel better. Deep down, I knew the truth. I wasn't good enough. And I never would be.
As the days went by, I went through the motions of school, but my heart wasn't in it. I felt like a part of me had died, and I didn't know how to get it back.
Jake and Rachel were everywhere, holding hands and laughing together. It was like they were rubbing it in my face, reminding me of what I'd lost.
I tried to avoid them, but it was impossible. They were always there, a constant reminder of my heartbreak.
And then, one day, I saw something that made my heart skip a beat. Jake and Rachel were standing in the hallway, holding hands and laughing together. But as I looked closer, I saw something that made my blood run cold.
Rachel was wearing my necklace. The one Jake had given me. The one that was supposed to be a symbol of our love.
I felt a wave of anger wash over me. How could Jake do this to me? How could he give my necklace to someone else?
I knew then that I had to confront Jake. I had to know why he'd given my necklace to Rachel. And I had to make him understand that he'd hurt me deeper than he could ever imagine.
