The Challenge Ahead

The Titans' dugout was buzzing after their first tournament win. Logan sat on the bench, wiping sweat off his face with his jersey, still feeling the adrenaline from turning that game-ending double play. Around him, his teammates celebrated, exchanging high-fives and talking about their next opponent.

Drew nudged Logan with his elbow. "Not bad, Clutch Carter. First tournament game, first multi-hit performance, and a couple of solid plays in the field. You feeling like a ballplayer yet?"

Logan grinned. "I think so. But, man, I didn't expect it to feel this intense."

Big Mac, stretching out his legs near the bat rack, laughed. "That's tournament baseball, rookie. Every play counts. Every mistake is magnified. But you? You handled yourself like a vet today."

Logan appreciated the compliment, but he knew one good game didn't mean much if he didn't back it up. The real test was coming next.

Coach Talbot walked over, holding the tournament bracket in his hand. He slapped it against the dugout bench to get everyone's attention. "Alright, listen up! Next game's in the afternoon against the Stonebrook Raptors."

A low murmur spread through the team. Stonebrook had a reputation. They were a powerhouse team, the defending champions, and they played with an aggressive, almost cocky edge.

Drew let out a low whistle. "Well… that escalated quickly."

Big Mac just grinned. "Good. I'd rather knock them out early than face them in the finals."

Coach Talbot looked around at the team, his expression serious. "They've got a deep pitching staff, solid bats, and they don't make many mistakes. But that doesn't mean we back down. We play smart, we play our game, and we battle. Got it?"

A loud chorus of "Yes, Coach!" filled the dugout.

Logan took a deep breath. He had heard about the Raptors before. They had scouts watching their games regularly, and some of their players were already getting looks from Division I colleges. This was exactly the kind of competition he had been training for.

And he wanted this challenge.

Pregame Warm-ups: Eyeing the Competition

A couple of hours later, the Titans took the field for warm-ups. Logan jogged out to second base with Jimmy, rolling his shoulders and shaking out any lingering nerves. The Stonebrook players were already on their side of the field, looking sharp in their navy and red uniforms.

Logan glanced toward their dugout and immediately spotted their team captain—Brandon Wolfe.

Wolfe was a senior, an all-state shortstop with a cannon for an arm and a swagger to match. He was already committed to a top-tier college baseball program and had the kind of presence that made it clear he expected to win.

As Logan was taking grounders, he caught Wolfe watching him from across the diamond, a small smirk on his face. He said something to one of his teammates, who laughed, and then turned back to his own warm-ups.

Drew jogged over, noticing the exchange. "Yeah, that guy's a piece of work. He plays like he owns the field."

Logan picked up a baseball and threw it back to Jimmy. "Let's make sure he knows he doesn't."

Drew grinned. "That's the spirit."

As warm-ups wrapped up, Coach Talbot gathered the team. "Remember, they're gonna play fast, they're gonna try to rattle us. Stay focused. Play our game."

Logan nodded. He was locked in.

First Inning: Welcome to the Big Leagues

The Raptors wasted no time proving why they were one of the best teams in the state.

Their leadoff hitter ripped a double into the left-field gap. Their number two batter executed a perfect bunt to move the runner to third. And then Wolfe stepped to the plate.

Logan could feel the energy in the stadium shift. Even the Raptors' dugout got louder, cheering for their star player.

The pitcher delivered.

Crack!

Wolfe sent a laser past the third baseman, bringing in the first run of the game. He cruised into second base, standing tall with a confident grin.

As he dusted off his pants, he turned toward Logan. "Better be ready, rookie," he called over. "This isn't some backyard ballgame."

Logan narrowed his eyes but didn't respond. He didn't want to give Wolfe the satisfaction of knowing he got under his skin.

By the time the inning ended, Stonebrook had put up three runs.

The Titans needed to answer.

Logan's First At-Bat: A Tough Welcome

Logan stepped into the batter's box for his first at-bat in the bottom of the second inning. Stonebrook's starting pitcher, a tall lefty with a wicked curveball, stared him down.

The first pitch—a fastball—whizzed by.

"Strike one!"

Logan gritted his teeth. The guy was throwing harder than the Redwood pitcher from earlier.

Next pitch—a curveball that broke late and caught the inside corner.

"Strike two!"

Logan exhaled, forcing himself to relax.

The pitcher wound up again, this time throwing a nasty slider low and away. Logan lunged, barely tipping the ball foul to stay alive.

The Raptors' catcher smirked. "Getting nervous, kid?"

Logan ignored him.

The pitcher fired again—another curve. This one started high and dropped into the strike zone.

Logan swung and missed.

"Strike three!"

As Logan walked back to the dugout, Wolfe called out from shortstop, "Welcome to the big leagues, Clutch Carter."

Logan clenched his fists. He wasn't about to let these guys walk all over him.

Mid-Game: Finding a Way Back

By the fourth inning, the Titans had managed to scratch across a run, but Stonebrook still led 4-1. The game was slipping away, and Logan knew it.

When he got his second at-bat in the fifth inning, he refused to let Wolfe and the Raptors' pitcher get the best of him again.

The first pitch came in—a fastball up in the zone.

Logan didn't hesitate.

Crack!

The ball jumped off his bat, a screaming line drive into left field. Logan tore out of the box and stretched it into a double.

His teammates roared from the dugout.

Jimmy, the next batter up, slapped Logan's helmet as he stepped to the plate. "That's how you shut 'em up, Clutch."

And when Jimmy followed up with a single that brought Logan home? The dugout exploded.

4-2. Game on.
