Matilda stood frozen in the middle of the room, her mind racing, her heart thundering in her chest. The weight of what she had just witnessed was like an anchor dragging her to the depths of despair. Jayden—her Jayden—was slipping through her fingers, and all she could do was watch as he turned toward the shadows, embracing a future that seemed to exclude her completely.
"Jayden," she whispered, her voice trembling as she tried to hold onto the shreds of hope she had left. "Please… don't do this."
But his response was colder than she could have ever imagined. He didn't turn back to look at her. His gaze remained fixed on the dark figure in the doorway, a silent bond between them that Matilda couldn't understand.
Riven, sensing her confusion, smirked as he stepped closer to the new arrival. "So, you've come to finish the job," Riven's voice was smooth, almost congratulatory, as though he knew something Matilda didn't.
The shadowed figure chuckled, the sound low and menacing. "The job was never finished, Riven. It was just beginning."
Matilda's eyes darted between the two men, but it was the way Jayden was standing now, his back rigid, his body poised in a way that suggested submission, that took her breath away. He wasn't the man she loved anymore. He wasn't even a man—he was a pawn in a game much larger than her heart could comprehend.
"You've made a grave mistake, Jayden," she finally found her voice, her words cutting through the air like a blade. "You're being used. He doesn't care about you. He's just manipulating you for his own gain."
But Jayden didn't flinch. He didn't react. It was as if her words had no impact, as if they had never mattered to him in the first place.
"Manipulation is a funny thing, Matilda," Riven said, his tone dripping with malice. "You think you can save him? But the truth is, he's already made his choice. And so have I."
Jayden didn't speak. He didn't have to. His silence spoke volumes, each second of it making Matilda feel smaller and more insignificant.
The shadowed figure took a step forward, its presence even more suffocating than before. As the figure emerged fully into the light, Matilda's breath caught in her throat.
The person who stood before her wasn't just a stranger. It was someone she thought she'd never see again. Someone whose betrayal had haunted her dreams.
"You..." she whispered, her voice barely a breath, as her knees began to tremble. "How?"
It was him. The very person she had believed was lost forever—her brother, Daniel. The one who had vanished from her life years ago under mysterious circumstances, leaving her with nothing but unanswered questions.
Daniel's cold, emotionless eyes locked onto hers. "I'm surprised you remember me, Matilda," he said, his voice devoid of any warmth. "I've been watching for a long time."
"You…" Matilda choked on her words, her mind reeling as she tried to comprehend the situation. "Why? Why would you side with them? You're not the man I knew."
Daniel's lips curled into a dark smile, one that seemed so foreign to the brother she had once known. "I'm not the man you knew because he never existed. I've always been something more. Something you weren't capable of understanding."
Matilda's entire world felt like it was crumbling. Her brother—her flesh and blood—had been a part of this twisted game all along. But why? What had pushed him to this point?
Jayden's voice, sharp and unforgiving, cut through her thoughts. "You're wasting your time, Matilda. Daniel has made his decision. I've made mine. And we've already decided our path forward."
Matilda's eyes flicked between the two of them, her heart breaking with each passing second. She had thought Jayden was the one thing that would remain constant in her life, the one person she could trust no matter what. But now… now she wasn't even sure who he was anymore.
"You don't have to do this," Matilda pleaded, her voice cracking under the weight of her emotions. "You still have a choice, Jayden. Please… come back to me."
For a moment, a flicker of hesitation passed over Jayden's face. It was so brief, so faint, that Matilda almost missed it. But it was there. He was still in there. The Jayden she knew was still alive, hidden beneath the layers of darkness that had taken root in his soul.
But then, just as quickly, the flicker was gone. Jayden turned away from her, his back once again to her, his loyalty now fully aligned with Daniel and Riven.
Matilda's knees gave way beneath her, and she collapsed onto the cold floor, her hands gripping the ground as if it might ground her to reality. Her breath came in ragged gasps as she tried to hold back the tears that threatened to consume her.
"I won't stop fighting for you," she whispered to the empty space where Jayden had once stood, her voice filled with pain and determination. "I won't give up on you, no matter how far gone you think you are."
Riven's laugh echoed through the room, a cruel sound that pierced her heart. "Fight all you want, Matilda. But the more you fight, the more you lose."
The figure of Daniel stepped closer, his eyes never leaving hers. "You should have stayed out of this, Matilda. You could have walked away, but you chose to stay. Now, there's no going back."
Matilda's gaze hardened as she stood up, wiping the tears from her eyes. She might have lost Jayden for now, but she would never give up. She would find a way to get him back. She would burn everything to the ground if she had to.
"Then I guess we'll just have to see who truly wins in the end," she said, her voice resolute, her resolve harder than steel.
