Jay could hardly sit still as he paced in his living room, phone in hand. He had spent the entire night turning the gadgets over in his mind. What was their purpose? Where did they come from? And why had they been left behind in his grandfather's garage? The uncertainty gnawed at him. He couldn't put it off any longer. He had to ask Grandpa Ed.
With a deep breath, Jay dialed his grandfather's number, trying to steady his nerves. After a few rings, Ed picked up.
"Hello?" his grandfather's voice came through the receiver, calm but warm.
"Grandpa, it's Jay," he said, trying to mask the urgency in his voice. "I need to talk to you about something. It's about the box in the garage. The gadgets inside it."
There was a pause on the other end. "The box?" Grandpa Ed's voice grew quiet, as though he was weighing his words. "What's going on with it?"
"I... I found something strange, Grandpa," Jay explained, heart racing. "There's a device with a glowing green crystal and another with a display screen, and I don't know what to make of them. I think they're... they're not from here. They're unlike anything I've ever seen."
Jay could almost hear his grandfather's sigh from the other end. "Jay, I think it's time you heard the truth."
The words hit Jay like a wave, and he stopped pacing, his heart thumping. "What truth?" he asked, barely able to keep his voice steady.
"There's a lot you don't know," Ed began, his voice turning more serious. "Those gadgets, they're not from Earth."
Jay's mind froze. "Not from Earth?" he echoed, his voice barely a whisper.
Ed's voice was steady, but Jay could tell there was a weight to his words. "No, Jay. They're alien."
Jay felt a rush of disbelief. Alien? His grandfather, an astronaut, had always spoken of strange encounters and unexplained phenomena, but Jay had never taken those stories seriously. Now, hearing his grandfather confirm what had always sounded like fantasy, his world was tilting on its axis.
"Grandpa, how do you know that? How can you be so sure?" Jay asked, his mind reeling.
"I've kept it from you for a long time," Ed admitted, the weight of his words hanging between them. "But it's time you understood. During one of my early missions, we were on Mars. My team and I found that box. It was buried beneath the surface, tucked away in a forgotten corner of the planet. At first, we thought it was just abandoned equipment, something from a past mission. But when we opened it, we found the gadgets inside."
Jay's pulse quickened as he listened intently. "You brought them back to Earth?"
"Yeah," Ed continued. "We didn't know what to make of them. They weren't like anything we'd seen. Not just the tech, but the design—it was completely different from anything humanity could create. We studied them, but we couldn't figure out their purpose. The crystal, the screen with those strange symbols—they didn't make sense. And every time we tried to activate them, they would go dormant again."
Jay's mind spun, trying to grasp what his grandfather was telling him. "So you think these gadgets are... alien?"
Ed sighed deeply. "I do. And I think they were left here for a reason, Jay. They're far beyond any technology we've developed, and I don't fully understand them myself. But I know they're important."
Jay's heart pounded. "What should I do with them, Grandpa? I've tried everything to get them to work, but they're not responding."
"I think you need to keep trying," Ed said, his voice steady but filled with caution. "You have to figure out how they work. But be careful, Jay. There's more to this than you know. These gadgets—they could be dangerous if they're activated the wrong way."
Jay swallowed hard. He had always thought of space and exploration as exciting, something to fuel his dreams. But now it seemed much bigger. There were forces at play that he hadn't even imagined. His grandfather was right. There were dangers in the unknown.
"I'll be careful," Jay said, his voice full of resolve. "But I need to know more. Why didn't you tell me about this sooner?"
"I didn't want to overwhelm you," Ed replied. "And I wasn't sure you were ready. But now... now I think you are. You're standing at the edge of something bigger than either of us. These gadgets, they're just a small piece of a much larger puzzle. And it's up to you to figure it out."
Jay felt a sense of purpose settle over him. He wasn't just building a rocket anymore. He was about to unlock secrets that could change everything. "What should I do next?" he asked, his voice steady now.
"You've got to keep working on those gadgets. Try different things. And if you find something, if you get them working, call me. We'll figure it out together."
Jay nodded, even though he knew his grandfather couldn't see it. "I will, Grandpa. I won't give up."
After they hung up, Jay sat in silence for a moment, his mind racing. He now knew the gadgets weren't just objects to be studied—they were part of something much larger. Something that was far beyond what he had ever imagined. Whatever this was, it had to be the key to something extraordinary. And Jay was determined to uncover every part of it.
