Chapter 18: The Calm Before the Storm

The settlement had grown. A week ago, they had been barely scraping by with a dozen weary survivors. Now, twenty more had joined their ranks—laborers, hunters, and even a few skilled craftsmen.

With their numbers, the palisade had been finished at last, standing tall and reinforced with sharpened stakes. The forge had roared to life, churning out tools and weapons, and under Bram's guidance, a dozen silver blades had been forged, their edges gleaming in the firelight.

For the first time, it felt like they had a fighting chance.

Then the news came.

Edric stormed into the village, his face pale, his breath ragged.

"My lord—" He swallowed hard. "The Hollowborn. They're gathering. Hundreds of them."

A hush fell over the crowd.

Leon's grip on his sword tightened. He had expected another attack, but not this. Not an army.

"How long?" he asked.

Edric shook his head. "A day at most. Maybe less."

The weight of the words settled over everyone.

Garrick was the first to break the silence. "Then we fight." His voice was firm, unshaken. "We have walls, weapons, and men willing to stand. We'll hold."

Leon nodded. "We will. But we need more than just walls."

He opened his system interface, eyes falling on the reward he had yet to claim.

[Defense Quest Complete – Reward Available]

He confirmed it.

A surge of power coursed through him, and a new notification appeared.

[Item Acquired: Guardian's Bastion Token]

A one-time-use token that allows the immediate construction of a powerful defensive outpost. Grants magical reinforcement and combat enhancements to all defenders within its range.

Leon pulled the token from his inventory. It was a small stone medallion, etched with intricate runes that glowed faintly in the dim light. He could feel the power thrumming within it.

He turned to Garrick. "We have one more defense."

Holding the token aloft, he activated it.

A pulse of energy erupted from his hands, racing outward in a wave. The earth trembled beneath their feet.

Then, before their eyes, a new structure began to form.

Wood and stone rose from the ground, shaping itself into a fortified outpost at the settlement's center. It wasn't just another wooden tower—it was something more. The walls shimmered faintly, magic woven into their very structure, and atop the bastion, a watchful beacon ignited, casting a golden glow over the settlement.

A notification flashed.

[Guardian's Bastion Constructed – All defenders within range gain +20% combat effectiveness. Defensive structures reinforced. Minor healing effect activated.]

Murmurs of awe rippled through the gathered settlers.

Leon exhaled slowly. This… this could change everything.

He turned back to his people, his voice carrying over the wind. "We have one day to prepare. This settlement stands, or we die fighting."

There was no hesitation in their response.

They would be ready.
