[Chapter 19: The Fusion of Hero and Villain]
Ten minutes later, the police and a stunning middle-aged woman arrived.
After learning the truth, the middle-aged woman screamed, "Oh my God! How could you do this? I want to kill you!"
She angrily brandished a pair of scissors at her husband.
Blonde police officer Katherine wrapped her arms around the woman, saying, "Please, ma'am! I understand how you feel, but this is police business now."
"My God! How did I ever marry this monster?" the woman sobbed.
Katherine glanced over at Ian, who was capturing the scene with his camera.
This made Katherine even angrier. "What else can you do besides just take pictures?"
"A lot, actually. Like saving an innocent girl before the police got here," Ian replied without changing his expression.
Katherine was left speechless.
Kate Beckinsale was equally perplexed.
Ian continued to talk to the distressed middle-aged woman while pointing his camera at her. "Mrs. Blazer, I hope you'll agree to my interview. "
Mrs. Blazer looked at him in disbelief. "What did you say?"
Ian calmly responded, "Logically speaking, I saved your daughter from greater harm, so you owe me something in return. From a practical standpoint, I could offer you an interview fee. To put it bluntly, I can choose not to expose your daughter's identity or photos to prevent further harm, but if you refuse to cooperate... there's a limit to my conscience. I did a good deed and expect some good in return! If you won't give it to me, I'll just take it!"
Kate Beckinsale felt a chill run down her spine.
"Is this how you really talk?"
Katherine had stormed over in anger. "You can't expose anything!"
"Too late," Ian said as he allowed her to take the camera away, a smirk on his face. "I sent the materials to the newspaper before I even called you. For the child's sake, it's best that all of you cooperate!"
Mrs. Blazer looked at him in shock. "I thought you were the hero who saved my daughter?"
Ian replied, "That's not a contradiction, ma'am! The world isn't just black and white! I can be a hero and a villain, but more often than not, I'm a fusion of both!"
Katherine stared at him in disbelief.
She turned to Kate Beckinsale, asking, "Is he telling the truth?"
Kate nodded. "Before he called the police, the first thing he did was send all the footage he had captured. He even said that if you came, you would definitely try to take his camera and stop him. Officer Brown, he predicted all of your reactions... he has a knack for making accurate predictions."
Katherine was at a loss for words.
After a long pause, she asked, "And you just let him do this?"
Kate smiled softly, saying, "I'm an actress, and I have to follow the director's arrangements."
Katherine felt an odd sensation as if she were being influenced by Ian, her thoughts slowly shifting to align with his perspective.
...
In the room, Mrs. Blazer was still crying as Ian sat across from her, continuously posing various questions.
"So you and your husband barely know each other for more than three months?"
"Are you sure he hasn't behaved like this before?"
"You're certain you didn't know?"
"In your day-to-day interactions with him, did you notice how he looked at your daughter?"
"Was your sex life harmonious?"
"Did you notice any abnormal behavior when he was around your daughter?"
Ian's rapid-fire questions left Mrs. Blazer stammering and distraught.
"Enough!"
Katherine couldn't take any more and yelled, "What do you think you're doing, Mr. Carr? She's already suffering; you shouldn't hurt her further! Look at the questions you're asking!"
Ian looked at Katherine and chuckled, "The public loves this! So it's not me who's shameless; I'm just catering to the audience!"
Katherine was shocked.
So the fault lay with the world?
Ian turned back to Mrs. Blazer, saying, "That interview we just did was worth ten thousand dollars."
"What?" Mrs. Blazer looked at him in astonishment.
Ian spoke seriously, "Ten thousand! If you're willing to continue the interview, I'll pay more. Mr. Blazer will certainly go to jail, and since you mentioned you're not working, it means your future life may be in trouble; you need money. So, I can wrap this up now; do you need me to finish it?"
Mrs. Blazer stared blankly at Ian. After thinking for a moment, she finally shook her head, "No, you're right. I need the money."
Ian smiled and looked at Katherine, who turned away in despair.
Was she just being too nosy?
"Then let's continue," Ian said softly. "When he was with you, did he have any habits? I mean, what positions did he prefer?"
Mrs. Blazer's face turned slightly red, but she continued to respond earnestly.
An hour later, the interview finally ended.
...
Ian efficiently wrote a check for twenty thousand dollars and handed it over to Mrs. Blazer. "Just remember, don't accept interviews from anyone else. Not every reporter has my ethics, and not everyone will keep your daughter's identity protected."
Mrs. Blazer nodded eagerly.
Katherine scoffed, "I didn't realize you had any ethics at all."
Ian smiled softly.
He packed his equipment and walked over to Katherine, saying, "You're still young, Officer Justice. I believe we'll have plenty more opportunities to work together. Soon enough, I'll show you a broader world, and you'll realize I'm actually a good person."
As he finished packing, he walked out.
At the door, Ian suddenly turned back and added, "By the way, as a savior of an innocent girl, shouldn't I receive an award from the LAPD?"
Katherine took a deep breath, keeping her anger at bay. "You will, you'll get it."
...
Ian smiled and turned to leave with Kate.
Following behind him, Kate whispered, "Ian, I'm starting to understand what kind of person you are."
Ian looked at her.
Kate smiled, "A madman who stops at nothing to achieve his goals."
Though it was a dig, her tone was gentle.
Ian said, "What if I told you that you're part of my goals too?"
She was definitely taken aback by his directness, feeling at a loss for words.
She gently shook her head, "No! I wouldn't like you."
Ian laughed.
He softly replied, "Women always say one thing and mean another."
