[Chapter 81: The High-Speed Interview (Part 3)]
The discussions on the news website exploded, buzzing with excitement!
The street racing and interview continued in full force.
Behind the wheel was Brydon, a driver for the gang, and he finally spoke up, "Are you guys done chatting? I need to hit the gas; if we don't move now, we'll be stuck here!"
In the distance, more police cars surrounded them, and several gang members simultaneously aimed their guns toward the front.
"Ahhhhh!!!"
The gangsters yelled wildly, firing their weapons furiously at the police cars up ahead, sparks flying as bullets hit.
"Move the camera towards the police car!" Ian yelled.
The SUV pulled back slightly, and Leyso tilted the camera to capture the action, clearly showing the gang's gunfire and the police cars puffing smoke.
The police retaliated, bullets whizzing past.
Ian crouched down, cradling his head.
Is there an eye technique that can resist bullets?
Damn, it seemed not!
Leyso stood there unflinchingly -- if he died for this interview, Ian promised to pay his child a million.
He knew Ian wouldn't back out.
...
The scene was a thunderstorm of gunfire, and the viewership of WND News Network surged.
Who cared about Fast & Furious?
This was the real speed and excitement!!!
At this moment, the gang's car burst through the police blockade, and several grenades went off.
The SUV barreled through the flames, continuing its pursuit.
The gang members peered back, yelling at Ian, "Kid, stop following us! Your report will blow our cover and let the cops find us!"
Ian quickly covered the microphone, shouting back, "No problem! I just want to warn you. The Los Angeles Times' helicopter is coming -- don't give them a chance to report on you! This is my exclusive! I'll definitely pay you that forty grand!"
The gang laughed heartily, "Sounds good, but you'd better buy a helicopter for yourself in the future!"
Ian chuckled, "Of course, I'll have one; everything will come to me!"
...
In the distance, the roar of the helicopter could be heard -- it was indeed the Los Angeles Times' reporters, cameras ready, capturing everything below.
They arrived faster than the police.
Two gang members raised their guns, firing madly at the helicopter.
The photographer panicked and quickly pulled back, shouting, "Fuck! We're journalists! Why are they firing at us?"
The host next to him was furious, "Get out! Get out! Keep filming! You cowardly idiot! You unprofessional jerk! News is life, keep shooting!"
Bang!
A bullet struck the helicopter, and the host ducked in fear, covering his head.
...
At that moment, Ian and his crew slowed down, watching the cars disappear ahead.
Ian asked Balster, "Do you think they can escape? Their license plates are exposed."
Balster laughed, "It's a modified car, automatic plate changes are a mandatory feature. But do you want them to get away?"
Ian confirmed his microphone was off and replied, "Of course! That way, there'll be follow-up news, right?"
Balster nodded, "You're right. May God bless them!"
Both Ian and Leyso chimed in, "God bless every professional! Amen!"
---
Ian's SUV finally came to a stop in an open area ahead.
They had to stop as several police cars surrounded them, cutting them off.
Katherine stepped out of one of the patrol cars, striding angrily toward them with her long legs.
Seeing her approach, Ian discreetly turned on his microphone, telling Leyso, "Keep filming, but no live feed."
Leyso nodded, the camera subtly focused on Katherine.
Katherine came up to Ian Carr, shouting, "Do you know what you did?"
Ian smiled slightly, "The whole world knows what I did."
There had never been an interview like this in human history.
Not a single one!
It was destined to become a global headline, and the focus wouldn't be on the gang but on Ian.
Katherine fumed, "Ian Carr, you're the most shameless bastard I've ever met! You could have captured those criminals, yet you chose to bargain with them!"
Ian replied, "Legal transactions! And as a journalist, I have the right to interview anyone. Meanwhile, don't you think you guys are a bit slow? You couldn't even catch up to the reporters' car! Don't you feel ashamed as police? You expect us to catch criminals? With what? A camera? Or the microphone I'm holding?"
Katherine was left speechless.
Ian smiled, saying, "But I understand your anger. You're a good cop after all. The people have already escaped, and I suggest you focus on chasing them down, rather than worrying about us!"
Katherine scoffed, "You guys sped down the highway, damaging numerous vehicles, violating traffic safety rules. I have the right to arrest you!"
"I'll pay for it!"
"Many cars!"
"Not all of them were us! I know how many cars we hit!" Ian smiled, pointing at the camera, "It all got recorded!"
Balster laughed, "Well said!"
"You bastard!"
Katherine grabbed Ian, punching him in the face.
Ian didn't dodge and chuckled as she hit him, saying, "The camera's still rolling. You're assaulting an innocent civilian, Officer Katherine. I can sue you for this."
Katherine froze for a moment, then coldly laughed, "Go ahead and sue; but for now, I'm arresting you!"
She proceeded to handcuff Ian.
Ian glanced at Leyso, nodding toward the equipment where he was stationed. Leyso gave a thumbs-up gesture, showing he understood.
---
At dusk, Ian emerged from the police station, accompanied by Congressman Brand and Chief Uhtred Beaton.
As they walked out of the building, Ian turned to Congressman Brand, saying, "I've said it before, but I want to say it again -- thank you for your help, Mr. Congressman."
Brand laughed heartily, embracing Ian, "I'm actually happy. It's great to finally do something for you, Ian! That's what friends do; we help each other!"
"Indeed!" Ian nodded.
Then he turned to Beaton, saying, "Thanks for your help too, Chief Beaton."
Beaton replied with a smile, "No problem, but I need your help with something as well."
"What is it?"
Beaton said, "Did you manage to get that video of Katherine hitting you?"
"Sure did."
"Did you upload it yet?"
"Not yet," Ian answered, chuckling, "You hoping I won't upload it?"
Beaton nodded, "It's probably for the best; Katherine will have some trouble otherwise... for her father's sake."
"Her father?" Ian asked, surprised.
Beaton explained, "Yes, her father is with the FBI, and he's not low-ranking."
"Wow!" Ian whistled.
The FBI -- definitely not ordinary folks.
Suddenly, a thought struck Ian, "I can cut the footage of her hitting me out."
Beaton nodded with a smile, "That's very kind of you."
Ian continued, "But there's one condition: she has to join me for dinner."
Beaton looked shocked, "You're trying to pursue her?"
Ian shook his head, "No! I just might need her help with some things."
Beaton thought for a moment, then nodded, "I can talk to her for you."
