Chapter 24: Into the Unknown

The wind howled through the sails as the Zephyros sailed further into the night, leaving Valenport and the danger of the city behind. The pale moonlight cast long shadows over the deck, and the sound of the waves crashing against the hull was the only thing that broke the silence.

Cassia stood at the bow, her fingers gripping the cold metal of the railing as she stared out into the open sea. Her thoughts were still reeling from the events of the night—the assassination, the gem, Master Theon's final words. She couldn't shake the image of his blood on her hands, the note he had pressed into her palm, and the cryptic warning he had whispered before he died.

Trust no one.

But Lucius…

Her mind flickered back to his gaze, how sharp and calculating it had been, but there was something else too—something she couldn't quite place. Had he known about the attack? Was he somehow involved? Or was he simply a player in the same game?

She had so many questions, but they had all been forced aside for the moment. For now, she had to survive.

Behind her, Selene was huddled in a corner of the ship, her eyes red from crying. She hadn't spoken a word since they boarded, her grief consuming her. Cassia had wanted to go to her, to offer comfort, but she knew it wasn't the time. Not yet. Selene needed space to mourn the loss of her teacher.

A sharp cough broke her from her thoughts, and she turned to see Lucius approaching, his expression as unreadable as ever.

"We've cleared the harbor," he said, his voice low but carrying the weight of authority. "We should be safe for now."

Cassia nodded, though her gaze remained fixed on the horizon. "Safe from what? The attack at the auction wasn't random. Someone wanted that gem, and they were willing to kill for it."

Lucius's gaze darkened, and for the first time, she saw a flicker of something—concern, perhaps, or maybe anger. "I know. And I have a feeling this is only the beginning."

The silence between them stretched for a moment before he spoke again. "You're a part of this now, Cassia. Whether you like it or not. That gem—it's important."

Cassia's heart skipped a beat, and she turned to face him fully, her eyes narrowing. "Important to who?"

Lucius took a step closer, his voice dropping to a near whisper. "To many. Too many." He glanced over his shoulder, ensuring they were not overheard, before continuing. "But we'll deal with that later. For now, we need to focus on getting you and Selene to safety."

Before she could respond, there was a sudden noise from the stern of the ship, followed by a series of loud bangs. Cassia's heart raced, and her first instinct was to duck down, but Lucius's hand shot out, grabbing her arm.

"Stay calm," he ordered. "It's not what you think."

She forced herself to breathe, her eyes scanning the ship for any signs of immediate danger. Then, through the darkness, she saw it—a figure emerging from the shadows, moving with swift, graceful steps.

It was Dorian.

Behind him, Castor was leading a disoriented Lord Elias Verrin up the gangplank. The merchant lord looked every bit the part—well-dressed, well-fed, and thoroughly annoyed, but alive.

Lucius released her arm and stepped toward the group, his voice cold as he greeted the lord. "Lord Verrin, I trust you're unharmed?"

Elias sneered but nodded. "Not that I'm thrilled to be in your company, Marcellus. But yes, I'm fine."

Lucius's lips curled into a tight smile. "Good to hear. I'd hate to think of your important connections being cut short."

Elias's eyes flickered, but he didn't respond, instead casting a glance at Cassia and Selene. "What's this all about?" he demanded, his gaze falling to the gem that Dorian had placed on the table in front of him. "And why do I feel like I've walked into a hornet's nest?"

Lucius held up his hand, silencing him. "I'll explain everything once we've reached a safer location. For now, I suggest you get some rest. You've been through enough tonight."

But Lord Elias wasn't about to be ignored. His eyes locked onto the gem, and he raised an eyebrow. "That's the artifact, isn't it? The one that started this mess?"

Lucius's smile vanished, and he straightened his posture, his demeanor shifting into something colder, more calculating. "It's far more than an artifact, Elias. It's a key. A key to something much more dangerous than you could possibly imagine."

Cassia felt her pulse quicken at the mention of a key. Master Theon had warned her about the gem, but he had only mentioned the Arcane Kingdom. What was its true purpose?

Before she could ask, Lucius gestured toward the horizon. "Get some rest. We'll talk in the morning."

But Cassia couldn't shake the feeling that the danger wasn't over yet.

...

The night passed uneventfully, the Zephyros cutting through the calm sea with little resistance. But as dawn approached, the mood aboard the ship shifted. The tension that had been building since their departure was palpable, and every creak of the ship seemed to echo in Cassia's ears.

Selene had finally fallen into a troubled sleep, her face pale and drawn. But Cassia remained wide awake, sitting at the bow with the gem clenched tightly in her hands. Her mind raced, trying to piece together the fragmented pieces of the puzzle.

The Arcane Kingdom. Elarion. The gem.

She felt as though she were standing at the edge of a cliff, staring down into an abyss, knowing that every decision she made from this point forward would pull her deeper into a world she didn't fully understand.

But there was no turning back now.

And just as Cassia was about to surrender to the weight of her thoughts, Lucius approached again, his footsteps soft on the deck.

"You've been quiet," he said, his gaze searching her face. "Are you all right?"

Cassia looked up at him, her expression unreadable. "I'm not sure I understand any of this. But I know one thing—I'm not going to let this gem fall into the wrong hands."

Lucius studied her for a moment before nodding. "Good. Because we're about to enter a storm, and it's going to take all of us working together to get through it."

Cassia's fingers tightened around the gem once more.

She wasn't sure if she was ready. But if it meant protecting the people she cared about—and the truth—she would see this through to the end.
