The dim, flickering light of a single lantern cast long, wavering shadows on the stone walls of the underground haven. The air was thick with silence, broken only by the soft murmur of voices and the occasional rustle of paper. Cassia stood at the far side of the room, her hands clasped tightly in front of her as she watched over Lucius. His breathing had steadied, though his eyes remained closed, his features still drawn with the remnants of pain.
It had been hours since the others had arrived, and yet, the weight of the situation still hung heavily over her. She couldn't shake the feeling that the storm was far from over. Her thoughts turned again to her uncle, to the Varros, and to the secrets that seemed to twist every corner of their lives. How deep did this all run? And how long would they be able to survive the coming storm?
Ulderic had gone off to gather more supplies, though Cassia suspected he was also trying to find a way to make up for his perceived failure. She knew the weight of responsibility was heavy on him, but in this moment, she wished she could ease that burden. The rest of Lucius's trusted allies had been stationed at various points within the haven, keeping an eye out for any sign of trouble. Everyone knew that they couldn't afford to relax—not with the threat of the Varro family still looming.
But Cassia couldn't help but feel a sense of peace here, in the underground labyrinth beneath the city. Despite the darkness that still threatened to spill over, she felt safe for the first time in a long while.
The door to the room creaked open, and she turned, her eyes immediately seeking out the figure that had entered. It was Selene, her ever-steady presence a welcome sight. The strategist moved with purpose, her sharp eyes scanning the room before falling on Lucius.
"How's he doing?" Selene asked quietly, her voice calm but tinged with concern.
"Stable, for now," Cassia replied, her voice betraying the hint of worry she still felt. "But the healers said he needs rest. His wounds are healing, but... I don't know how long he can stay unconscious."
Selene nodded and crossed the room, her gaze lingering on Lucius for a moment longer than necessary. "We're doing everything we can, Cassia. He'll wake up when he's ready. You've done your part, and now it's our turn to handle the rest."
Cassia nodded, but her mind was elsewhere. She had used the Vox Dharma to contact Octavian, hoping that she could reach someone who could help. The thought of how close she had come to losing Lucius still gnawed at her. She hadn't been able to call upon the right people quickly enough.
"I just wish I knew what was going on," she murmured, her eyes shifting from Lucius to the door. "The Varros... my uncle... everything feels like a tangled web. I can't tell who's on our side anymore."
Selene's sharp eyes softened as she placed a hand on Cassia's shoulder. "Sometimes, the truth isn't as clear as we'd like it to be. But we have to keep moving forward. For Lucius, for Elias, and for everyone who's counting on us."
Cassia looked at Selene, a faint smile tugging at her lips. She appreciated the strategist's calm words, even if they didn't completely dispel the unease twisting in her gut. Selene always had a way of making the impossible seem within reach.
"Where are the others?" Cassia asked, trying to shift her focus away from her worries. "Elias? Dorian? Castor? Are they all safe?"
"Elias is resting," Selene said, her voice cool and practical. "He's recovering, but we'll need him on his feet soon. The others are on watch. Dorian's been keeping an eye on the perimeter, Castor's handling the communications, and Ulderic's making sure we're prepared for anything."
"Good," Cassia muttered, her thoughts drifting again. She couldn't shake the feeling that the worst was still to come, and she wasn't sure if they were prepared for what was ahead. "I don't trust the Varros. Not after what happened today. My uncle—there's something he's hiding, something I don't understand."
Selene's eyes narrowed slightly, her gaze hardening. "You're right. The Varros are more dangerous than we thought. And your uncle is no exception. But you need to stay focused, Cassia. The answers will come, but they won't come easily. We have to be ready for anything."
Cassia took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. "I don't know if I can do this. I don't know if I'm ready to face all of this."
"You don't have to do it alone," Selene said, her voice low but strong. "We're all in this together. Lucius trusts you. We trust you. You don't have to be perfect. You just have to keep fighting."
Her words struck a chord deep inside Cassia. For the first time in days, she felt a small flicker of hope rise within her. She wasn't alone. Not anymore. They were all fighting for the same thing.
Suddenly, there was a commotion from the hallway, the sound of hurried footsteps and raised voices. Cassia's heart skipped a beat as she turned toward the door. Selene immediately moved into a defensive stance, her hand falling to the hilt of her dagger.
"Stay here," she whispered to Cassia, her eyes hardening. "I'll see what's going on."
Before Cassia could protest, Selene was out the door, moving swiftly down the hall. Cassia remained by Lucius's side, her nerves tightening as she listened for any sign of trouble. The seconds stretched into what felt like hours, and she couldn't shake the sense that something terrible was about to happen.
Then, the door to the room burst open again, and this time it wasn't Selene who entered. Instead, it was Ulderic, looking more disheveled than before. His eyes were wide, filled with urgency.
"Cassia," Ulderic said, his voice thick with concern. "There's been a change in plans. The Varros are moving faster than we anticipated. We need to act now."
Cassia's pulse quickened, her heart pounding in her chest. "What do you mean? What's happening?"
Ulderic's expression was grim. "They've made a move. They're closer than we thought. If we don't do something now, we'll be caught off guard."
Cassia's mind raced as she stood, her body tense. She glanced back at Lucius, whose unconscious form still lay on the bed. "We can't leave him," she whispered.
Ulderic's face softened, and he placed a hand on her shoulder. "We won't. But we need to act now. For Lucius's sake—and for the sake of everyone else."
Cassia felt a surge of determination. She wasn't going to sit idly by while the people she cared about were in danger. She wasn't going to lose them—not without a fight.
"Tell me what to do," she said, her voice steady despite the storm raging inside her.
Ulderic nodded sharply. "Follow me. We need to get the others together."
Cassia didn't hesitate. She was ready. The time for waiting was over. The Varros were closing in, and it was time to fight back.
