Scene 1: An Invitation
The rhythmic squeak of sneakers and the dull thud of volleyballs against the polished gym floor had become familiar sounds to Renji Takahashi. Yet, as practice came to an end and the team began cooling down, he found himself once again retreating into his own world—wiping down his arms, avoiding unnecessary conversation, and focusing on keeping his breathing steady.
"Oi, Renji!"
He stiffened slightly at the sudden call. Yuuto Shimizu, the team captain, was standing in the middle of the gym with a towel slung over his shoulders, arms crossed.
"We're heading out to eat," Yuuto said. "You coming or what?"
Renji hesitated. Going out with the team meant being in a crowded place, surrounded by chatter, laughter, and attention he wasn't used to. The thought made his chest tighten, but before he could shake his head, another voice chimed in.
"It'll be fun," Asuka Fujisawa said with a bright smile, appearing beside him. "You've been working really hard—consider this a well-deserved break."
Renji glanced at her, then at the rest of the team, who were now gathering their belongings and preparing to leave. A few of them were already making bets on who could eat the most, their voices carrying easily through the gym.
Would it really be so bad?
After a deep breath, he gave a small nod. "...Okay."
Asuka beamed. "Great! Let's go before they eat everything."
And just like that, Renji found himself being pulled into something new once again.
Scene 2: A New Challenge
The restaurant was a lively place—not overly packed, but filled with the warm scent of grilled meat and the chatter of various groups. Renji had been led to a long table where the team had already settled in, joking and laughing while flipping sizzling slices of meat on the tabletop grills.
As Renji slid into his seat, he noticed how naturally everyone interacted. Yuuto was arguing with another player about sauce preferences, while others were already challenging each other to eat spicy dishes. Even off the court, the team's energy never seemed to wane.
Renji focused on the food in front of him, quietly taking in the scene.
"You're too quiet," Asuka said, nudging him lightly. "Try joining in a little."
Renji hesitated. "I don't know what to say."
"Start small." She smiled. "What's your favorite food?"
Renji thought for a moment before answering. "...Curry."
"See? That wasn't so hard." Asuka grinned. "Alright, next question—spicy or mild?"
"Mild."
"Aww, I thought you'd be able to handle spice," she teased.
"Not really," Renji admitted, a bit more relaxed now.
The conversation continued in small bursts, and to his surprise, he found himself growing more comfortable. He wasn't leading the discussions, but he was there—present, engaged, and slowly finding his rhythm within the group.
Scene 3: A Test of Trust
As the meal continued, the conversation turned to volleyball. Yuuto, now leaning back with his arms crossed, looked at Renji.
"You've gotten better," he admitted. "But you still hesitate too much."
Renji tensed slightly, unsure whether to take it as praise or criticism.
Yuuto continued, his sharp gaze unrelenting. "Defense isn't just about reacting—it's about controlling the flow of the game. If you keep second-guessing yourself, you're going to cost us points."
The words stung, but Renji knew they weren't wrong.
"So, what do you suggest?" Asuka asked, sensing the tension.
Yuuto smirked. "A trust test."
The table quieted.
"What kind of test?" one of the players asked.
Yuuto grabbed an empty glass, balancing it on his hand. "If Renji wants to be a libero, he needs to trust his instincts and his teammates. So, let's see if he can handle a game of reflexes."
Renji raised an eyebrow, unsure where this was going.
"You have to catch something with your eyes closed," Yuuto explained. "If you drop it, you lose. If you catch it, we know you're improving."
Renji frowned. "That's not volleyball."
"Sure it is. It's about anticipation," Yuuto countered. "We'll count down, and someone will toss an object at you. You have to catch it, no matter what."
It was ridiculous. But somehow, Renji found himself nodding.
"Fine."
The team whooped in excitement.
"Alright, close your eyes," Yuuto instructed.
Renji exhaled, shutting out the sight of the restaurant. He listened carefully, his senses sharpening.
"Three... two... one—"
A soft object sailed toward him.
Without thinking, Renji's hand shot up, fingers closing around something small. When he opened his eyes, he found himself holding a folded napkin.
The team erupted into cheers.
Asuka clapped. "That was amazing!"
Renji blinked down at his hand, a small smile forming before he even realized it.
Maybe, just maybe, he was starting to belong here.
Scene 4: Walking Home
The night air was cool as the team dispersed, each player heading their separate ways. Renji found himself walking alongside Asuka, their pace slow and comfortable.
"You did great today," she said softly. "Not just in the game, but with everyone."
Renji looked down, kicking at a small pebble. "It still feels… unnatural."
"That's because you're not used to it yet." Asuka tucked her hands into her coat pockets. "But you're getting there."
They walked in silence for a few moments.
"Asuka," Renji finally said, "why do you care so much?"
She stopped, tilting her head.
"I mean… about me." He hesitated, then forced himself to finish. "Why are you trying so hard to help me fit in?"
Asuka smiled, her expression warm. "Because I see something in you, Renji. I see someone who's trying, even when it's hard. And I believe in that."
Renji felt something tighten in his chest—an unfamiliar warmth that he didn't quite know how to describe.
For the first time in a long while, he felt seen.
As they continued walking, Renji realized something else, too.
He didn't mind the idea of being part of this team anymore.
Maybe, just maybe, he was right where he needed to be.
