Mole in SHIELD

---------

Kai, who was in the manor, was having dinner with Steve when he received a message from Gear.

He took out his phone and saw the news that a shooting had occurred on the streets of Washington. Just as Kai was about to put down his phone, thinking it was just another shooting, he suddenly noticed a photo of Nick Fury in the news compiled by Gear.

It turned out that when the shooting happened, Gear had already recorded the general process through roadside surveillance, pedestrians' cell phones, and other equipment.

This allowed Kai to fully understand the whole situation.

Then Kai said to Steve, "Hey, Steve."

Seeing Steve looking up with a puzzled expression, Kai continued, "I just got the news that Nick Fury was attacked on the road."

Steve, who was scooping a large spoonful of rice into his mouth, paused and asked, "Was he attacked?"

"That's right," Kai nodded. "To be precise, he barely escaped after being attacked, but his current condition is unknown."

Hearing this and noticing how Kai continued eating with no urgency, Steve knew Kai had no intention of finding and helping Fury.

However, while Kai had no plans to intervene, Steve couldn't just sit by.

Nick Fury was the one who had brought him out of the ice. Even though they had their differences, Fury had at least built SHIELD into what it was today.

Thinking of this, Steve put down his spoon and asked, "Kai, do you know where he went?"

"You're wondering where he'd hide now?"

Steve nodded. "I need to find him and get the details."

After taking another bite of rice, Kai said, "Think about it—he was attacked, so he must be suspicious of everyone. Who do you think he can trust now?"

Hearing this and seeing Kai looking straight at him, Steve pointed at himself in disbelief. "You mean, he trusts me?"

"Exactly," Kai confirmed. "If I'm not mistaken, he must have offended someone, and now they're trying to silence him. And that someone must be in SHIELD—after all, he was attacked right after leaving SHIELD."

Steve considered this and waited for Kai to continue.

"Since the threat is from SHIELD, no one there can be trusted. The only ones left are Hill, Coulson, and you."

"The first two are too far away to reach Fury in time, so the only one left is you, Captain."

Hearing this, and the way Kai emphasized "Captain," Steve finally understood—Nick Fury could still trust him. And if he was looking for someone trustworthy, he'd go to Steve.

"Then that means... he must have gone to my place!" Steve realized where Fury would go without needing Kai to spell it out.

Seeing Steve stand up and grab his jacket, Kai asked, "Need me to come with you?"

Steve hesitated, recalling Kai's lack of concern for Fury, then shook his head. "Forget it, I'll check it out myself. I'll call if I need help."

Kai made no move to get up and continued eating. However, he casually opened a space portal with his free hand, connecting directly to the front door of Steve's apartment, saving Steve some travel time.

Steve glanced at Kai, nodded in thanks, and stepped through. He reached for the doorknob but paused—music was playing inside.

It was likely Nick Fury, but Steve stayed cautious. He quietly opened the door and entered.

In the living room, he spotted Fury slumped on the sofa, looking exhausted.

Fury lifted his head upon hearing the noise and saw Steve standing at the entrance.

Seeing that it really was Fury, Steve finally relaxed.

"I don't remember giving you a key," Steve remarked.

"Do I need a key?" Fury replied, then added, "My wife kicked me out."

Fury was clearly avoiding the real topic.

Steve caught on and played along. "I didn't know you were married."

"There's a lot you don't know about me." Fury then typed on his phone and showed it to Steve:

*Walls have ears.*

Realizing what Fury meant, Steve understood—he had been followed.

Out loud, Fury continued, "Sorry for dropping by. I had nowhere else to go."

On his phone, he added: *There's a mole in SHIELD.*

Steve immediately grasped the situation and responded accordingly. "Who else knows you have a wife?"

Fury played along. "Only my friends."

And on his phone, he wrote: *Just you and me.*

"Are we friends?" Steve asked.

"That depends on you."

Before they could continue, three gunshots shattered the tense moment, striking Fury through the wall.

As Fury collapsed, Steve acted fast, dragging him into another room while catching sight of the shooter outside through the window.

Before Steve could chase after the attacker, Fury shoved a USB drive into his hand.

Steve looked at him and knew—this drive was crucial. Without hesitation, he tucked it away and rushed after the shooter.
