The atmosphere was heavy with tension.
Ren perched atop the destroyed training facility, looking out over the blackened world. They were arriving.
The Black Ember Syndicate—killingest assassins in the kingdom—were arriving, and Ren wasn't going to let them take him by surprise again.
This time, he'd be prepared.
Sera adjusted the grip of her katana, golden eyes cutting sharp. "We don't know how many are coming."
Kaela, huddled close to the edge of the ruins, smiled. "Doesn't matter. If we do this right, we won't have to fight all of them at once."
Ren took a deep breath, fists tightening. "Fine. Let's run it through one more time.".
Kaela moved closer, sketching out a rough map of the ruins on the ground with her dagger. "The Syndicate always sends out scouts first. They don't attack blindly—they'll send one or two to scout things out before the real killers arrive."
She indicated the thin corridors of the ruins. "That's where we trap them."
Ren nodded. "And then once they enter."
Sera smiled. "We ensure they don't leave."
They had occupied the final hours fortifying the ruins, making them a killing field.
Delicate strands of steel, imperceptible in the moonlight, draped over the gates.
Explosive spells were seeded among the rubble, barely perceptible.
And, above all—Ren's fires.
He had spent the night practicing a new art, one that would enable him to possess the entire field as his instrument.
Ren extended his hand, and a small flicker of Blue Fire danced between his fingertips.
Kaela watched closely. "You've improved."
Ren smirked. "It's not just about burning anymore."
He took a deep breath, concentrating.
The flames didn't burst outward like they usually did. Instead, they spread across the ground in thin, invisible embers, embedding themselves into the stone without consuming it.
Kaela's eyes narrowed. "Flame markers?"
Ren nodded. "I can light them on fire whenever I want. The instant they step inside. I'll burn them from the ground."
Sera whistled. "Dirty trick."
Ren's grin vanished. "They won't expect it. And I'll take whatever advantage I can get."
Because this was not just a battle.
It was a war.
As they finished getting everything ready, Kaela stood up and wiped her hands. "Alright. All set."
Ren breathed deep, extending his fingers. He could feel it. The storm before the peace.
Sera cracked her knuckles. "Think they'll bite?"
Kaela's smirk returned. "Oh, they will."
Ren looked up at the moonlit sky. The moon was high. The time was close.
They'd done as much as they could.
Now, all that remained—
Was to see if it was enough.
