The toll of the bell echoed through the empty streets, its deep chime carrying an unnatural weight. Elias and Leira stood at the entrance of the old district, the towering structure of the bell tower casting long shadows under the dim glow of the street lamps. The parchment's cryptic instructions echoed in Elias's mind:
"Seek the whispering door. The city does not sleep as it seems. Follow the forgotten path beneath the bell tower. Midnight will show the way."
Elias scanned the area, his gaze settling on the base of the tower. Weathered stone steps led down to an arched passageway, half-hidden beneath creeping ivy and centuries of neglect.
"This must be it," he murmured.
Leira hesitated. "Are we sure about this?"
Elias glanced at her, his expression firm. "We don't have another choice. Whatever this path leads to, it's part of the initiation."
With a slow breath, he descended the steps. The archway was narrow, forcing them to squeeze through single file. The air turned cold as they stepped inside, carrying the scent of damp stone and something older—something forgotten.
The passage stretched forward, curving slightly as if winding beneath the city itself. Their footsteps echoed, swallowed by the pressing silence. Faint symbols were etched into the stone walls, worn down by time but still humming with an unsettling energy.
Then, a sound—faint at first, like the rustling of paper in the wind.
Leira stiffened. "Do you hear that?"
Elias nodded. The whispers grew clearer, forming indistinct words just beyond understanding. He instinctively reached for the vial the masked figure had given him, feeling the cool glass press against his palm.
A door loomed at the end of the corridor, its surface covered in shifting, arcane sigils. The whispering emanated from behind it, growing louder, almost insistent.
"Knock."
The word came not from the whispers, but from somewhere deeper in Elias's mind.
He hesitated, then raised his hand and rapped his knuckles against the wood.
The sigils pulsed, and the door creaked open.
A dark void lay beyond, swirling with mist.
Leira grabbed his arm. "Elias—"
Before she could finish, the world around them warped, pulling them forward.
They tumbled into darkness, the air thick with the weight of unseen forces. Elias gasped as the sensation of falling gripped him, yet there was no ground to hit—just an endless descent.
Then, light.
A vast chamber materialized around them, filled with floating staircases and suspended lanterns that flickered with cold, blue flames. Shadows slithered along the walls, forming shifting figures that observed in silence.
A voice—calm, yet laced with something ancient—spoke from the depths.
"You have taken the first step. Now, prove you are worthy."
The shadows moved.
And the test began.
