Whispers of the Crystal

Over the next year, Magnus's life became a whirlwind of strange routines and cryptic lessons. Arnold and Tracy began training him, though they never fully explained why. Each morning, he was woken before dawn and taken to a secluded room in the mansion, where he was taught to meditate, focus his mind, and control his breathing.

"The crystal responds to intent," Arnold explained one day, his voice calm but firm. "You must learn to quiet your mind, to channel your energy. Only then will you be ready."

Magnus tried his best, though the exercises often left him frustrated and exhausted. He didn't understand why he had to do these things, but he didn't dare ask. The few times he had questioned Arnold or Tracy, they had responded with vague answers or stern warnings.

Eleanor, meanwhile, watched from the sidelines, her expression a mix of curiosity and resentment. She had always been the center of attention in the Adams household, and Magnus's arrival—and his apparent importance—clearly bothered her.

One afternoon, as Magnus practiced his breathing exercises in the garden, Eleanor approached him, her arms crossed. "Why do you even bother?" she asked, her tone sharp. "You'll never be one of us. You're just a tool to them, you know."

Magnus looked up, his heart sinking. He had tried to befriend Eleanor, but she had always kept him at arm's length. "I'm just doing what I'm told," he said quietly.

Eleanor smirked. "Of course, you are. That's all you're good for, isn't it? Obeying orders."

Magnus didn't respond. He had learned that arguing with Eleanor only made things worse. Instead, he focused on his breathing, trying to block out her words. But deep down, her words stung. Was he really just a tool? Was that all he would ever be?

One night, Magnus was drawn to the basement again. The hum of the crystal had grown louder in his mind, a constant presence that he couldn't ignore. This time, he didn't hesitate. He crept down the stairs, his heart pounding, and stood before the glowing crystal.

As he reached out to touch it, he felt a surge of energy, warm and electric, coursing through his body. The hum grew louder, filling his mind, and for a moment, he felt a connection—a sense of belonging that he had never known.

But just as quickly as it came, the connection was broken. Arnold's voice echoed through the room, sharp and angry. "What do you think you're doing?"

Magnus turned to see Arnold and Tracy standing in the doorway, their expressions a mix of anger and fear. "I—I felt it calling me," Magnus stammered. "I just wanted to—"

"You're not ready," Tracy interrupted, her voice firm. "The crystal is powerful, Magnus. Too powerful for you to handle on your own. You could have hurt yourself—or worse."

Magnus looked down, his cheeks burning with shame. "I'm sorry," he whispered.

Arnold sighed, his expression softening slightly. "You're making progress, Magnus. But you must be patient. The crystal will reveal its secrets to you in time. But only if you're ready."

Magnus nodded, though his mind was filled with questions. What would happen when he was ready? What secrets did the crystal hold? And why did he feel such a strong connection to it?
