Chapter 8

"It's strange, really. That group of people committed a crime a week ago and were arrested, but a couple days ago I heard they were released after the man's family signed a letter of forgiveness."

"I don't know what that man's family was thinking. After suffering such a terrible ordeal, they could still forgive those animals. If it were my son, I'd give up my own life to make sure they all paid the price."

The manager rattled on, but Elowen only caught a few words.

A week ago, Back Alley.

It was like someone had struck her over the head. Her mind went blank with a deafening buzz.

Dane, who had rushed over, also heard these words. He stood frozen in place, his face ashen.

"Darling, we were wrong, all wrong."

"They're the ones who hurt Damien. How could Damien possibly have sought them out? We... we misunderstood Damien..."

"We drove Damien to his death."
