Chapter 12: phase Omega the end of evolution
Boom!
Adrian collided with Erebus.
The impact sent a shockwave through the entire facility, cracking the walls and shattering the floor beneath them.
For the first time—Erebus was pushed back.
Vanessa's eyes widened.
Adrian's golden veins blazed, brighter than ever. His energy pulsed, raw and untamed, as if something inside him had finally awakened.
His limiters were gone.
And his body was evolving again.
Erebus snarled, its void-like eyes flickering with something almost like… uncertainty.
Adrian clenched his fists, feeling the raw power surging through him.
This was different.
Before, he had only adapted to survive.
Now—he was evolving to win.
Vanessa's shock quickly melted into a smile.
"Yes… yes! That's it!" she breathed, her golden eyes burning with excitement.
"This is what I wanted to see, Adrian! You were always meant to be the pinnacle! The true evolution! Don't you see?" She stretched her arms wide. "You and Erebus—you are the future of humanity!"
Adrian's gaze hardened.
Vanessa's voice turned almost… pleading.
"Join me."
Sophie froze.
Evelyn's grip on her daggers tightened. "Like hell he will."
Vanessa ignored her, stepping forward.
"You could be so much more, Adrian. Don't fight it. This is your destiny."
Adrian exhaled, his golden energy swirling around him.
He looked at Vanessa, his expression unreadable.
Then—he smirked.
"Screw destiny."
And with that, he attacked.
Boom!
He vanished, reappearing in front of Erebus in an instant.
Erebus swung a clawed arm—Adrian caught it.
The sheer force of their clash tore through the air.
But this time—Adrian didn't budge.
His golden energy surged—and Erebus's arm cracked.
The creature roared, stumbling back for the first time.
Lucas blinked. "Did… did he just break that thing's arm?"
Sophie's breath caught.
Adrian was surpassing Erebus.
But Vanessa… was still smiling.
Adrian's instincts screamed a warning.
Something was wrong.
And then—Vanessa raised a hand.
And whispered, "Final Override."
Erebus froze.
Its void-like eyes turned completely black.
And then—it changed.
Its body twisted, its exoskeleton cracking apart, revealing something underneath.
Something worse.
Adrian's pulse pounded.
"What the hell…?"
Vanessa's smile turned cruel.
"Let's see if you can handle Phase Omega."
Erebus roared—and the entire facility shook.
Adrian barely had time to react before everything turned to chaos.
The air shattered.
Erebus's body convulsed, its exoskeleton breaking apart, revealing something monstrous beneath.
Its arms stretched unnaturally long, its fingers twisting into razor-sharp claws that pulsed with void energy. Its chest split open, revealing a writhing mass of golden veins and darkness intertwined.
And its face—
Its face was no longer humanoid. It was shifting. Warping. A nightmare given form.
Adrian barely had time to react before—
Boom!
Erebus moved.
Faster than anything Adrian had ever seen.
A fist slammed into his gut.
His body folded inward. The force was so immense that the very air exploded around him.
Adrian was sent flying through three walls.
Crack!
Something snapped in his ribs.
Pain screamed through his body, but his mind barely had time to register it—because Erebus was already there.
It didn't stop.
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Fists rained down on him, each one heavier, faster, more devastating than the last.
Adrian couldn't keep up.
His golden veins flared, trying to adapt—but they weren't fast enough.
Erebus was evolving too.
Sophie screamed. "Adrian!"
Lucas cursed. "We need to do something!"
Evelyn gritted her teeth. "We can't. He's—"
"Dying."
Vanessa's voice was almost… disappointed.
She watched the chaos unfold, her golden eyes gleaming.
"This is why you should've listened, Adrian," she said, shaking her head. "Erebus is the pinnacle. It has no flaws. No weaknesses."
She stepped forward, her boots clicking against the ruined floor.
"And now…" She smiled. "It will erase you."
Erebus lifted Adrian by the throat.
The golden glow in Adrian's veins flickered. Dimming.
His body was shutting down.
His evolution had reached its limit.
Sophie's hands clenched into fists. "No… No, this isn't how it ends."
She turned to Vanessa, rage burning in her eyes.
"You think he's reached his limit?" she snapped.
Vanessa tilted her head. "He has."
Sophie shook her head.
"Then you don't know Adrian."
She stepped forward.
"He's not like your creations. He's not like you."
Sophie's voice rose.
"He's not just evolving to survive—he evolves to win."
Adrian's eyes snapped open.
His golden veins blazed.
Vanessa's smirk faltered.
Erebus paused.
And then—Adrian roared.
Golden flames erupted from his body.
Not just light.
Not just power.
Fire. Pure. Absolute. A force that defied evolution itself.
Erebus screamed.
Because for the first time—it felt pain.
Vanessa took a step back, stunned.
"This isn't possible," she whispered. "What is—"
Adrian grabbed Erebus's wrist.
And crushed it.
Crack!
The creature reeled back in agony, void energy sputtering from its wounds.
Adrian hovered above the ground, his entire body engulfed in golden flames.
His voice was like thunder.
"You think this is my limit?"
He spread his arms.
The fire raged.
And then—his body changed.
Golden wings erupted from his back.
His eyes burned brighter than the sun.
His entire form was now something beyond human—beyond Revenant—beyond anything Vanessa had ever created.
He had become something new.
Something Vanessa never planned for.
Her voice trembled.
"…Phoenix."
Adrian's gaze locked onto her.
And for the first time—Vanessa looked afraid.
Boom!
Adrian vanished.
And Erebus's final battle began.
Boom!
Erebus staggered back, its massive form shuddering as Adrian's golden flames burned through its body.
For the first time, the creature—the supposed perfect evolution—let out a sound that was almost… fear.
Vanessa froze.
This wasn't supposed to happen.
Adrian wasn't supposed to be capable of this.
Her voice was tight, controlled, but underneath it—panic.
"What… are you?"
Adrian stood in the flames, his body wreathed in golden fire, his wings stretching wide behind him. His eyes, once merely glowing, now blazed like miniature suns.
His voice was calm, but it carried a weight that sent a shiver down Vanessa's spine.
"I don't know," he admitted. "But I do know one thing."
He raised his hand—and the flames surged higher.
"I'm done playing by your rules."
Erebus lunged.
It was faster than before—its void energy writhing wildly, adapting again, trying to overcome Adrian's evolution.
But it was too late.
Adrian moved.
In an instant, he was above Erebus.
A single strike.
A single, blazing punch.
Boom!
Erebus screamed.
The impact was like a meteor crashing into the earth. The shockwave tore through the entire facility, sending debris flying, walls collapsing—even Vanessa was thrown backward.
Erebus's chest caved inward, golden fire erupting from within.
It convulsed—its body fighting against the inevitable.
But Adrian didn't let up.
Another strike.
Then another.
Each blow ripped through Erebus's body, burning away its existence.
The so-called pinnacle of evolution—was being erased.
Vanessa gritted her teeth, forcing herself to her feet.
She refused to accept this.
"Erebus!" she commanded, her voice sharp. "Adapt! Overcome it! You are the ultimate form!"
But Erebus—did not obey.
It twitched. Stumbled.
Then, it turned its head—and looked at her.
Vanessa's breath hitched.
Something shifted in Erebus's void-like gaze.
And then—it spoke.
"…No."
The word was guttural. Raw.
Vanessa's heart stopped.
Adrian frowned. "It can talk?"
Vanessa took a step back. "That's—" She clenched her fists. "Impossible."
Erebus wasn't supposed to think.
It wasn't supposed to choose.
But now—it was looking at Vanessa with something that resembled recognition.
And hatred.
"…You made me this way."
Vanessa's golden eyes widened.
Erebus took a step toward her.
Then another.
Its body was falling apart—but it didn't care.
It was no longer fighting Adrian.
It was coming for her.
Adrian's flames flickered around him as he watched, his expression unreadable.
Vanessa's breathing shook.
"You… will obey me," she whispered. "I created you."
Erebus laughed.
A dry, empty sound.
"You… destroyed me."
And then—it lunged.
Vanessa screamed.
