Chapter 15: Flames of Evolution
The air around Adrian crackled with energy, his heart pounding as the Reaper Wyrm's colossal form loomed overhead.
He could feel it—the weight of this battle was different. His body was tired, his golden flames sputtering, unable to break through the Wyrm's defenses.
But inside him—there was a flicker.
The blue flames.
Adrian's mind raced back to the vision—the ancient figure, the older, stronger version of himself.
"This isn't just about rebirth. It's evolution."
His fingers clenched into fists, the familiar burn of golden fire igniting.
But this time—it wasn't enough.
I need more.
Adrian closed his eyes, pushing past the pain in his body, the exhaustion clawing at him. He needed to awaken it.
He couldn't fail now.
He reached deep inside himself, feeling the fire of his soul. The golden flames began to shift, their hue changing—first flickering, then blazing.
Blue.
The flames turned blue, a shimmering brilliance flooding his vision, burning hotter than anything he had ever felt.
His body shuddered, the power coursing through him, filling him with strength.
Sophie and Lucas watched in awe as Adrian's entire form radiated with blue flames, an inferno that dwarfed anything they had seen before.
"Adrian!" Sophie shouted. "You did it!"
Adrian's eyes opened, now glowing with blue fire. His breath was steady, the burn in his chest eased by the power coursing through him.
He felt unstoppable.
The Reaper Wyrm turned again, its massive mouth opening to unleash its destructive power.
But Adrian was already moving.
In the blink of an eye, he was there, right in front of the Wyrm, his fists clashing with its obsidian scales.
Boom!
The Wyrm recoiled, stunned by the force of the blow, its eyes flashing with surprise.
Adrian's blue flames exploded outward, surging like a tidal wave, breaking through the Wyrm's defenses. Its scales cracked, the once-impenetrable exterior shattering under the weight of his power.
"This is it." Adrian whispered to himself, his flames intensifying.
The Reaper Wyrm roared in pain, thrashing in the air. But it couldn't escape Adrian's fiery grasp.
Adrian focused, channeling all his energy into his hands, and then—
"Die!"
He thrust his hands forward, the blue flames exploding outward, engulfing the Wyrm's entire body. The beast let out one final scream before its form disintegrated into ash, blown away by the force of Adrian's flames.
Silence.
The battle was over.
Adrian stood, breathing heavily, his body still pulsing with blue fire. His golden eyes flickered between the two forms, the blue flames slowly dimming.
Lucas and Sophie slowly approached, their expressions a mix of awe and disbelief.
"You…" Sophie whispered. "You really did it. You beat it."
Adrian let out a tired laugh, still feeling the heat of the battle in his veins. "It wasn't just me." He looked at her, his eyes softening. "We all did this."
Lucas stepped forward, smirking. "Yeah, well… I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that we just took down an ancient Reaper Wyrm. That thing was supposed to be a myth."
Adrian's expression hardened. "It wasn't a myth."
Sophie blinked. "What do you mean?"
Adrian's gaze darkened, his voice low. "This isn't over. The Wyrm wasn't here by accident. It was sent. And there's something bigger coming."
Lucas stiffened. "Bigger than that?"
Adrian nodded slowly. "We're not dealing with just random monsters. Someone or something is controlling these creatures. We're being tested. And we need to be ready for whatever comes next."
A heavy silence fell over them.
Sophie stepped closer to Adrian, her hand gently brushing his arm. "We'll be ready. We're with you, Adrian. Always."
Adrian turned to her, a determined look in his eyes. "Good. Because it's only going to get harder from here."
And as the last remnants of the Wyrm's ashes floated away in the wind, Adrian knew—the true battle was just beginning.
Shadows in the Dark
The last embers of the Reaper Wyrm's remains flickered out, dissolving into the wind. The city, though damaged, stood eerily silent in the aftermath of the battle.
Adrian exhaled, his blue flames slowly fading. His body still pulsed with raw energy, the newfound power coursing through his veins—but something didn't feel right.
This wasn't the end.
Sophie glanced at him, concern flickering in her eyes. "Adrian… you're sure it was sent?"
Lucas scoffed, cleaning his blade. "A creature like that doesn't just show up randomly. Someone is playing a dangerous game." He sheathed his weapon and turned to Adrian. "Question is—who?"
Adrian clenched his fists, his mind racing. The Obsidian Order? No, Vanessa wasn't reckless enough to send something like that.
Then… who else?
Before he could answer, the air shifted.
A sudden chill crawled down Adrian's spine.
Lucas tensed. "Do you feel that?"
Sophie frowned, her hand instinctively moving toward her weapon. "We're not alone."
Adrian's flames flickered to life again. He turned sharply, scanning the rooftops.
Then—
A shadow moved.
A figure stepped out from the darkness, their presence so overwhelming that even the air seemed to bend around them.
Draped in a long, flowing black coat, their face was obscured by a dark hood. But their aura was undeniable.
Ancient. Powerful.
And familiar.
Adrian's muscles tensed. "Who the hell are you?"
The figure's lips curled into a smirk. "You've finally begun to awaken, Phoenix."
Sophie inhaled sharply. "They know about your power."
Adrian narrowed his eyes. "You sent the Wyrm, didn't you?"
The figure chuckled, stepping forward. "Sent it? No." Their voice was smooth, yet laced with amusement. "I merely… unleashed it."
Lucas gritted his teeth. "So you're working with whoever's pulling the strings."
The figure tilted their head. "Working with? No." Their smirk deepened. "I am simply here to observe."
Adrian's flames surged higher. He wasn't in the mood for riddles. "Observe what?"
The figure's smile faded, their tone turning serious.
"Whether or not you are truly worthy of what's coming next."
Silence.
Adrian's heart pounded. What's coming next?
Sophie stepped forward. "Who are you?"
The figure finally pulled back their hood, revealing sharp, chiseled features, eyes like molten silver, and jet-black hair that shimmered under the moonlight.
Lucas sucked in a breath. "No way…"
Adrian's stomach twisted. He recognized the face, but that was impossible.
Because the person standing before him was supposed to be dead.
The figure smirked. "It's been a while, hasn't it, Adrian?"
Adrian's breath hitched.
"You…" His voice was barely a whisper.
"You're supposed to be dead."
A Ghost from the Past
The wind howled through the ruined streets, carrying the scent of scorched earth and lingering embers. Adrian's heartbeat thundered in his ears as he stared at the figure before him.
Silver eyes. Jet-black hair. A face he thought he'd never see again.
His throat went dry. "You're dead. I watched you die."
The man smirked, tilting his head slightly. "And yet, here I am."
Sophie stepped closer to Adrian, whispering, "Who is he?"
Adrian didn't answer immediately. His fists clenched, flames flickering faintly around his knuckles. Because he knew exactly who this was.
Kieran Vale.
A man who had been more than a rival. More than a threat.
A brother-in-arms turned enemy.
Lucas' eyes darted between them, sensing the tension. "Adrian… what's going on?"
Adrian finally spoke, his voice low, controlled. "Kieran died five years ago."
Kieran chuckled softly. "Is that what they told you?" His silver eyes gleamed with something unreadable. "You of all people should know the truth isn't always what it seems."
Adrian's jaw tightened. "Don't play games with me." His flames surged. "If you faked your death—"
Kieran raised a hand lazily, cutting him off. "I didn't fake anything. I really did die."
Sophie's breath hitched. "That's impossible."
"Impossible?" Kieran grinned. "And yet, Adrian here just came back from the dead himself, didn't he?"
Silence.
Adrian felt the weight of those words. His rebirth. His evolution. The system that had changed him forever.
Lucas cursed under his breath. "You're saying… what? You were resurrected like Adrian?"
Kieran gave a slow nod. "Something like that." His smirk faded slightly. "But unlike you, Adrian, I didn't get a second chance for free."
Adrian took a step forward. "Then tell me. Who brought you back? And why?"
Kieran sighed, as if debating whether to tell him. Then, with an unsettling calm, he said:
"The Ebon Covenant."
Sophie and Lucas exchanged sharp glances. That name was new.
Adrian's gut twisted. "Never heard of them."
Kieran let out a dark chuckle. "You wouldn't have. They stay hidden. And trust me—you don't want to know what they're planning."
Adrian's flames flared again. "Then tell me anyway."
Kieran looked at him for a long moment. Then he sighed. "Alright, Adrian. I'll give you one truth."
He stepped forward, locking eyes with Adrian.
"You're not the only one evolving."
The air grew heavy. Adrian felt a chill run down his spine.
Kieran continued, his voice dropping lower. "Your 'Phoenix System'… it's not the only one out there."
Lucas stiffened. "You're saying others have—?"
"Yes." Kieran's silver eyes gleamed. "The world is changing, Adrian. You're not the only one who came back stronger. And soon, you're going to realize… you might not even be the strongest anymore."
Adrian's blood ran cold.
This wasn't just about his power. This was something much, much bigger.
Sophie spoke, her voice barely above a whisper. "And what does the Ebon Covenant want?"
Kieran smiled, but it didn't reach his eyes.
"They want control. Over all of us." He turned away slightly, glancing at the ruined city. "They sent the Reaper Wyrm as a warning. They know you're getting stronger. They're watching you."
Adrian gritted his teeth. "Then let them watch. I'll burn down anyone who—"
Kieran shook his head. "You still don't get it."
He looked at Adrian, his expression suddenly unreadable.
"They don't want to kill you, Adrian."
The blue flames around Adrian flickered uncertainly. "Then what?"
Kieran's voice dropped, cold and sharp.
"They want to recruit you."
The words hit like a thunderclap.
Adrian's flames vanished. Sophie and Lucas both froze.
Recruit him?
Adrian let out a slow breath, his mind racing. If the Ebon Covenant wanted him alive, if they wanted him on their side…
Then that meant—
He wasn't just a threat to them.
He was valuable.
And that terrified him more than anything else.
An Offer Wrapped in Chains
Adrian's flames burned in his palms, his mind racing as Kieran's words echoed in his head.
They want to recruit you.
Sophie broke the silence first, stepping forward. "What kind of sick joke is this?" Her voice was sharp, laced with disbelief. "After everything they've done, after sending that monster, they think Adrian would ever work with them?"
Kieran sighed, as if he had expected that reaction. "You're still thinking too small." He turned his gaze back to Adrian. "This isn't a war where you pick sides, Adrian. You think you're fighting the Obsidian Order, but they're just the surface of something much deeper."
Adrian's jaw tightened. "Then tell me, Kieran. Who are the Ebon Covenant, really?"
Kieran's silver eyes flickered with something unreadable. "They're the ones shaping the future. The ones who understand that evolution isn't a gift—it's a necessity. And right now, they see you as something… unique."
Lucas let out a short, bitter laugh. "Let me guess. They think Adrian is 'special' because of his Phoenix System?"
Kieran shrugged. "Not just because of that. Because of what he represents. The Covenant believes in survival of the fittest. And Adrian—" He smirked slightly. "You're proof that death doesn't mean the end anymore."
Adrian took a slow breath. "And what if I refuse?"
Kieran's expression didn't change. "They'll try to convince you."
Sophie's fingers curled into fists. "You mean they'll hunt him."
Kieran gave a half-smile, but it wasn't amused. "They don't want to kill him, Sophie. They want to own him." His gaze darkened. "And if persuasion doesn't work? Well… let's just say they have other ways of breaking people."
A heavy silence filled the air.
Adrian's flames burned hotter. "I don't break."
Kieran chuckled. "That's what I thought too."
Something in his tone made Adrian pause. There was no arrogance in Kieran's voice—just experience. Like he had been through something Adrian couldn't yet understand.
And suddenly, Adrian realized—
Kieran wasn't just here to warn him.
He was here because he had already been through it himself.
Adrian narrowed his eyes. "You're one of them now, aren't you?"
Kieran didn't answer right away. He glanced at the sky, at the ruins around them, before exhaling. "I didn't have a choice."
Lucas scoffed. "There's always a choice."
Kieran finally looked back at Adrian, his silver eyes colder than before. "Not when they take everything from you."
His voice was quiet, but the weight of it was undeniable.
Sophie's expression softened, just slightly. "What did they do to you, Kieran?"
He smiled faintly, but it didn't reach his eyes. "The same thing they'll do to Adrian if he's not careful."
Adrian's flames flickered. "Then tell me how to stop them."
Kieran shook his head. "You don't. Not yet." He took a step back, his presence shifting, as if he was ready to leave. "You're not strong enough to fight them, Adrian. Not yet. And if you try—"
He hesitated.
Then, his expression darkened.
"They'll take someone you care about instead."
Adrian's flames died instantly.
Sophie sucked in a breath. Lucas stiffened.
Kieran's voice was calm, but his words struck like a blade. "That's how they work. They don't kill you. They take pieces of you, one by one, until there's nothing left but what they want you to be."
Adrian's fists clenched. His mind flashed to Sophie, to Lucas—to Vera, to the Ashen Serpents, to everyone who had stood by him.
He could take pain. He could take death.
But he wouldn't let them touch the people he cared about.
Ever.
Kieran sighed. "I've said what I came to say. They're watching, Adrian. Be ready."
He turned to leave, shadows gathering around him.
But just before he vanished, Adrian spoke.
"Are you really with them, Kieran?"
For the first time, Kieran hesitated.
Then, in a voice barely above a whisper—
"I don't know anymore."
And then, he was gone.
Leaving Adrian with a truth heavier than any battle he had ever fought.
The First Move.......
The city remained eerily silent after Kieran's departure. The tension in the air lingered like smoke from a dying fire.
Sophie turned to Adrian, her face tight with concern. "Adrian… what are we going to do?"
Adrian exhaled slowly, his flames flickering out. He stared at the spot where Kieran had vanished, his mind racing. The Ebon Covenant. The people who had taken Kieran. The ones who were watching him.
They wanted him.
And if what Kieran said was true… they would come for the people around him first.
Lucas crossed his arms, his expression unreadable. "If this Covenant is as powerful as Kieran says, we can't just sit around waiting for them to make a move."
Adrian nodded, his gaze sharp. "We won't." He turned to Sophie. "I need you to contact Vera."
Sophie blinked. "The Ashen Serpents?"
"Yes." Adrian's jaw clenched. "The Obsidian Order isn't the only faction with resources in this city. If the Covenant is watching us, I want eyes everywhere."
Lucas smirked. "So, we're going on the offensive?"
Adrian's flames reignited in his hands. "Damn right we are."
Meanwhile…
Far from the city ruins, in a fortress hidden beneath the earth, a group of figures sat in a dimly lit chamber.
A massive obsidian table stretched before them, runes glowing faintly on its surface. At its head sat a man cloaked in deep crimson, his fingers idly tapping against the polished stone. His presence alone was suffocating.
A woman with silver hair and piercing violet eyes leaned forward, her voice smooth but deadly. "Kieran met with him."
The man in crimson nodded, unfazed. "And?"
The woman's lips curled. "He's resisting. As expected."
Silence filled the room before another voice—a deep, rumbling baritone—spoke from the shadows. "Then we should proceed with the next step."
The man in crimson finally smiled.
"Yes." His fingers stilled. "It's time we show Adrian Graves exactly what it means to refuse us."
A snap of his fingers.
The chamber's doors opened, and from the darkness, a prisoner was dragged forward—bound in chains, beaten, but still alive.
The woman's smirk widened. "Let's see if this one makes him bend."
The prisoner lifted their head weakly, revealing a bloodied face—
Someone Adrian knows.
And the trap was set.
---
A Name in Blood
A cold shiver ran down Adrian's spine. Something wasn't right.
He turned to Sophie and Lucas, his instincts screaming. "We need to move. Now."
Sophie frowned. "Adrian, what's wrong?"
Lucas tensed. "You think they've already—"
Adrian's flames flared. "I don't think. I know."
At that moment, Sophie's communicator buzzed violently. She snatched it up, pressing the receiver. "Vera?"
A sharp voice crackled through the line. "They took him."
Adrian's blood turned to ice. "Who?"
A pause. Then—
"Leon."
Adrian's chest tightened. "No…"
Leon. His oldest friend. The one who had been with him before everything—the system, the Order, the power struggles.
Sophie's knuckles turned white as she gripped the device. "Where?"
Vera's voice was grim. "They left a message at his apartment. A mark in blood."
Adrian closed his eyes. He already knew what it was.
Lucas exhaled sharply. "The insignia of the Ebon Covenant."
A challenge.
A warning.
A trap.
Adrian clenched his fists. "I don't care if it's a trap. We're going after him."
Sophie swallowed. "But Adrian, if they took Leon—"
"I don't care." His voice was low, controlled, but beneath it was a storm waiting to be unleashed. "They want me? Fine. I'll give them what they want."
Lucas stepped forward. "Then we're coming with you."
Adrian shook his head. "No. You two need to stay and work with Vera. Find out everything you can about them. I'll go alone."
Sophie grabbed his wrist. "Adrian, listen to yourself! This is exactly what they want! If you go alone—"
Adrian pulled away, his gaze dark with fury. "And if I don't? Leon dies."
The room fell silent.
Sophie's lips trembled, but she knew he was right.
Lucas muttered a curse. "Damn it."
Adrian turned toward the door. He already knew where he needed to go.
The Ebon Covenant wanted him to come.
They had no idea what was about to happen.
He was coming.
And he was bringing hell with him.
---
Into the Lion's Den
Adrian stood before the abandoned trainyard, its rusted structures looming like skeletons in the night. The air was thick with the scent of metal and decay.
This was where they had taken Leon.
A single lantern flickered at the center of the yard, casting eerie shadows over the cracked pavement.
No guards.
No noise.
Too quiet.
Adrian exhaled slowly, rolling his shoulders. His flames crackled at his fingertips, itching for release. If they wanted a fight, he would give them one.
Step.
A soft footfall echoed to his left.
Then another.
Then—
A whisper of movement behind him.
Adrian ducked just in time to dodge the first strike. A blade whistled past his head, slicing the air where his throat had been.
Ambush.
His flames roared to life as he spun, his fist colliding with the first attacker—a masked figure clad in black. The force sent them flying back, but before he could follow up, three more closed in.
One aimed for his ribs.
Another for his legs.
The last dropped from above.
Adrian barely managed to twist away, his flames forming a shield just in time to block a dagger aimed for his heart.
"Welcome, Phoenix."
A voice—smooth and taunting—cut through the chaos.
Adrian's flames illuminated the figure standing atop a rusted train car. A woman with silver hair and violet eyes. The same woman from the Covenant's meeting.
She smiled, tilting her head. "You came alone. How predictable."
Adrian's fists tightened. "Where is he?"
She sighed dramatically. "So impatient."
A snap of her fingers.
The train doors slammed open.
Two figures emerged, dragging a third between them.
Leon.
His face was bruised, his lip split. His arms were bound, and a faint glow of suppression runes pulsed along the chains wrapped around his wrists.
His eyes locked onto Adrian's, fierce despite his injuries. "Don't do anything stupid," he rasped.
Adrian took a step forward—
CRACK.
A gunshot rang out, and a bullet whizzed past Adrian's ear, close enough that he felt the heat.
The silver-haired woman tsked. "Ah-ah. Move too fast, and the next one won't miss."
Adrian stilled. His flames flickered. His heart pounded.
She smiled. She had him.
Or so she thought.
"Now," she purred, stepping closer, "let's have a little talk."
---
The Covenant's Offer......….
Adrian's fists clenched as he forced himself to stay still. The flames inside him burned hotter, demanding release, but one wrong move and…
Bang.
The silver-haired woman's gun clicked as she pointed it directly at Leon's head.
She smirked. "Smart boy. You understand the situation, don't you?"
Adrian grit his teeth. "If you wanted me dead, you would've killed me already. So talk."
The woman let out a soft laugh. "Clever. I like that." She took a slow step forward, her violet eyes gleaming in the dim light. "My name is Selene Voss. And unlike some of my… more aggressive associates, I prefer to negotiate."
Leon spat blood onto the ground. "You call this negotiation?"
Selene barely spared him a glance. "Survival requires leverage."
Adrian's flames flickered at his fingertips. "Get to the point."
Selene's smirk widened. "The Ebon Covenant has been watching you for a long time, Adrian. You're not just some stray who stumbled into power."
Adrian narrowed his eyes. "And?"
Selene tilted her head. "We know about your system."
A cold chill spread through Adrian's chest.
"Ah." Selene caught the slight flicker in his expression and smiled. "So it's true. You weren't chosen by chance."
Leon's eyes widened. "Adrian, don't listen to them—"
Bang!
Another gunshot. This time, it hit the ground inches from Leon's feet.
Adrian's flames roared to life, his body tensing. "You really think this intimidation act is going to work?"
Selene chuckled. "I think you're curious."
She leaned in slightly, lowering her gun. "Your system… the power that resurrects you, makes you stronger with each death. Do you even know what it really is?"
Adrian's breathing slowed.
Selene's smirk deepened. "You don't, do you?"
She let the words settle, the weight of them pressing into the air.
Then she whispered, "It's not yours."
Adrian's heart stopped.
Selene's voice was smooth, almost playful. "Your power isn't random. It didn't just choose you. It's part of something… much bigger."
Adrian's flames crackled, but he said nothing.
Selene stepped back, satisfied. "Join us, Adrian. The Covenant doesn't just want you dead. We want you to evolve."
Leon growled. "Don't listen to her! Whatever they're offering, it's a lie!"
Selene sighed dramatically. "You think so? Then why don't you ask yourself… why the Obsidian Order is so desperate to control you?"
Adrian's jaw tightened.
Selene smiled. "Come with me, Adrian. I'll show you the truth."
The flames around Adrian's hands wavered. His mind raced.
Was she lying?
Was she telling the truth?
What did she mean, 'It's not yours'…?
Leon's chains rattled as he struggled. "Adrian! Don't—"
Selene raised the gun again, pressing it to Leon's temple. "Decide quickly."
The night stretched silent.
Then Adrian said—
---
A Dangerous Temptation...…..
Adrian held Selene's gaze, his flames flickering wildly around his fingers. He could feel the weight of the moment pressing down on him, the heat of battle mingling with something far more dangerous—her presence.
Selene's violet eyes gleamed in the dim light, her smirk never fading. She tilted her head, stepping closer, her body moving with a slow, deliberate grace.
"Come now, Adrian," she purred, her voice like silk. "You don't have to resist everything. Power… knowledge… pleasure. They're all within your grasp. If you're bold enough to take them."
Adrian's pulse quickened. He could feel the heat radiating from her, different from the flames he wielded—a different kind of fire.
Leon groaned in his restraints, but his voice was distant. "Adrian… don't…"
Selene placed a finger against Adrian's chest, trailing it lightly over the smoldering fabric of his shirt. "I can show you everything you crave," she whispered. "The truth about your system. The truth about yourself. And if you let me…"
She leaned in, her lips barely a breath away from his ear.
"I can show you things you've never even imagined."
A shiver ran through Adrian's spine, his body betraying the logical part of his mind. Every instinct screamed danger, but another part of him—a darker, more primal part—was intrigued.
He could see it in her eyes. She wasn't just testing him. She was enjoying this.
She wanted him to break.
Adrian's jaw tightened. "You think seduction will make me forget what you've done?"
Selene chuckled, trailing her fingers lower, just above his waistband. "Oh, Adrian… don't flatter yourself. This isn't just seduction."
Her other hand came up, brushing against his jaw. "This is control."
Adrian snapped.
In a sudden burst of movement, he grabbed her wrist, his grip tight. The heat of his flames surged against her skin, and for the first time, Selene's smirk faltered.
"Wrong," Adrian growled. He yanked her closer, their bodies nearly flush. "You don't control me."
Selene's breath hitched, but her surprise quickly turned into something else—a thrill.
Their eyes locked. The air between them grew thick, charged with something both deadly and intoxicating.
For a moment, neither moved. Neither spoke.
Then—
Bang!
A gunshot shattered the tension.
Adrian's grip loosened, and Selene took a sharp step back, regaining her smirk.
"Interesting," she murmured, running a hand down her arm where his fire had left a faint red mark. "Very interesting."
But before Adrian could react, another voice cut through the chaos—
"Enough!"
A new figure stepped forward from the shadows.
And everything change.
---Between Fire and Shadows
Adrian's grip on Selene's wrist lingered, his flames flickering between them, neither retreating nor advancing. Their breaths mingled, the heat between them no longer just from his power.
Selene's smirk returned, her violet eyes burning with something far more dangerous than mere desire. Power. Control. Temptation.
"You're holding back," she whispered, tilting her head so her lips nearly brushed his. "Afraid of what you might feel?"
Adrian's jaw tightened. "I don't trust you."
Selene chuckled, her free hand sliding up his chest. "Good." Her nails raked lightly over the fabric of his shirt, teasing the embers of his restraint. "That makes it more exciting, doesn't it?"
Adrian should have pushed her away.
He didn't.
Her fingers trailed to the edge of his collar, and in that moment, all the battles, all the betrayals, all the bloodshed—it all faded into the background. Here, now, it was only them.
Selene pressed closer, her body molding against his, her scent intoxicating. "You burn so hot, Phoenix…" Her lips hovered just above his, teasing. "But do you know how to let yourself melt?"
Adrian's pulse pounded. He could feel her warmth, the way her body responded to his nearness, the subtle hitch in her breath despite her composed exterior.
He was no fool. He knew what this was—a game.
But damn it, he was tired of fighting every temptation.
With a growl, he closed the distance, his lips crashing into hers.
Selene gasped softly against his mouth, but she didn't hesitate—she met his fire with fire, her fingers tangling into his hair as she pulled him deeper into the kiss.
It wasn't gentle.
It was war.
She bit his lip, and he responded by gripping her waist, pulling her flush against him. Heat coursed through his veins, a wildfire he couldn't control.
Her hands roamed his chest, nails dragging against skin as if testing how much of him could take before he snapped.
Adrian lifted her suddenly, pressing her back against the cold metal of the train car. She gasped, her legs instinctively wrapping around his waist.
"Still think you're in control?" he muttered against her lips.
Selene's smirk returned, her breath heavy. "Maybe I like a little resistance."
Adrian's flames flared around them, a battle of heat and shadows, both refusing to submit—
Then—
"Adrian!"
Leon's voice cut through the haze like a blade.
Adrian's eyes snapped open. His grip on Selene loosened just slightly.
Selene exhaled slowly, watching him with sharp amusement. "Tsk. And here I thought we were just getting started."
Adrian took a step back, his breathing still ragged, his heart pounding against his ribs.
Selene licked her lips, violet eyes dark with mischief. "You can pretend all you want, Phoenix, but next time…" She leaned in, whispering against his ear, "You won't stop."
She turned on her heel, vanishing into the shadows as more figures emerged from the darkness.
Leon, still bound but furious, growled. "Damn it, Adrian! What the hell was that?"
Adrian ran a hand through his hair, trying to ignore the lingering heat still burning in his veins.
What the hell was that?
And more importantly—why did part of him want it to happen again?
---
What's Next?
Adrian regains focus—how will he escape with Leon?
Selene clearly isn't done with him—what is her real endgame?
What new threat waits in the darkness as the Covenant's plan unfolds?
