My eyes widened as I stared at the trident in the king's hand.

"You're kidding, right?" I asked.

Please say yes. 

The king shook his head solemnly. "I assure you I'm not. I wish I were, though. It would have saved us a lot of trouble after all."

So, this is what The Cult was after—a sea weapon strong enough to kill a god. I had expected bad news, but this was way worse. 

It went without saying that I wasn't the biggest fan of the gods, having already met a couple of them. They were arrogant and had an annoying knack for ruining my life. But still, letting someone kill them sounded like a horrible idea, cosmically speaking. 

"So, we have a possible divine extinction on our hands," said Laine thoughtfully, and I controlled the urge to whack him. 

My intervention where divinity was concerned was frankly way above my pay grade, but no one cared when it came to exploiting me.
