Chapter 36: The Monster Unleashed

Shade had never believed in hell.

But as he sat in the safehouse, watching Jade struggle to breathe, her blood soaking through his hands, he realized he had been living in it all along.

She was dying.

And it was his fault.

Lauren had stabilized her as best she could, patching up the wound. But it wasn't enough. She needed a hospital.

They couldn't go to a hospital.

Not with the entire city hunting them.

Not with the monster inside Shade clawing to take over.

Jade's voice was weak. "Shade…"

He gripped her hand, forcing himself to stay calm. "I'm here."

Her lips curled slightly. "I should've just let you lose control."

Shade's throat tightened. "Don't talk like that."

Jade coughed, a flicker of blood on her lips. "I saw it… for a second. The real you."

Shade exhaled slowly. "You saw what Lucian made me."

Jade's fingers brushed his. "And you still came back."

Shade clenched his jaw. "Because of you."

Jade smirked weakly. "Good… I'd hate to be the only thing keeping you human."

Then her eyes fluttered closed.

And Shade's world broke.
