Chapter 10 – The Crisis That Wasn't Supposed to Be Mine
Ding!
[New Task: Assist in solving the internal security breach.][Objective: Investigate potential moles within the company and report findings.][Rewards: +3 Intelligence, Unique Skill Unlock – 'Digital Espionage']
Chen Yunran exhaled sharply as he read the system notification.
He had only been at this company for a short time, and yet, here he was, being dragged into some high-stakes internal security issue.
He pinched the bridge of his nose. This wasn't supposed to be my problem.
Yet, it was.
Across the room, Xu Meilin was speaking in hushed tones with a senior manager. Her sharp gaze flickered toward him for a second before she returned to her conversation.
10% favorability after a single interaction—a promising start.
Still, if this security issue was real, he needed to tread carefully.
The Investigation Begins
After lunch, Zhang Wei tossed a thick stack of access logs onto Chen Yunran's desk.
"Since you're the new guy, you get to handle the boring work," Zhang said with a grin.
Chen Yunran raised an eyebrow but didn't protest. Boring work, huh? For him, this was a goldmine of information.
Most logs showed typical activity—employees logging in and out. But one entry stood out.
A failed login attempt.
From an internal workstation.
He kept his expression neutral as he casually flipped through the files. "Hey, Zhang, how often do employees get locked out due to failed passwords?"
"Happens all the time," Zhang replied. "People forget stuff."
Chen Yunran nodded, filing that away. Maybe this was nothing…
But his instincts told him otherwise.
A Late-Night Break-In
Under the cover of night, Chen Yunran found himself standing outside the IT storage room—the location of the suspicious login attempt.
He didn't have a keycard, but that wasn't a problem.
Ding!
[Skill Activated: Digital Espionage (Temporary)]
A subtle beep confirmed his access.
Inside, the air smelled of old electronics and dust. He powered on the flagged workstation and navigated to the login history.
And there it was.
Someone had attempted an administrator-level login from this exact terminal.
He copied the logs onto a flash drive, erasing any trace of his access.
"That was quick."
Chen Yunran's body tensed. He turned around—
Xu Meilin stood at the doorway, her arms crossed.
Shit.
Favorability Gains & Losses
"You're not supposed to be here," Xu Meilin said coolly.
Chen Yunran kept his face neutral. "Neither are you."
A flicker of amusement crossed her face.
Ding!
[+7% Favorability with Xu Meilin. (Total: 17%)]
"You have guts," she admitted. "That's rare in new hires."
Then her eyes hardened.
"But breaking security protocols is a serious offense."
Ding!
[-2% Favorability with Xu Meilin. (Total: 15%)]
Chen Yunran sighed internally. One step forward, one step back.
Still, he had her attention now.
After explaining what he had found, Xu Meilin studied him for a long moment before finally nodding.
"You might have just saved us a lot of trouble," she said.
Ding!
[+10% Favorability with Xu Meilin. (Total: 25%)]
As she turned to leave, she gave him a warning. "Don't make me regret keeping you around."
The door closed behind her.
Chen Yunran let out a breath.
This job was going to kill him.
