Nowhere to Run

Pain seared through Alexa's shoulder as the tracker was ripped from her skin. Blood dripped onto the forest floor, but she barely flinched. Alexandra groaned beside her as her own was removed, her body trembling from exhaustion. Amira clenched her jaw, standing guard, her knife never lowering.

The scarred woman crushed the tiny devices beneath her boot. "They'll know something's wrong in minutes," she muttered. "We need to move."

The leader, the one with the sharp eyes, motioned to them. "Follow. Now."

Alexa hesitated.

Every instinct screamed at her not to trust them. These weren't guards. But they weren't exactly allies either. Undercover operatives? Rebels? Spies?

None of that mattered. They had no other option.

She tightened her grip around Alexandra's waist, whispering, "Stay with me."

Alexandra barely nodded.

The group moved swiftly, navigating the darkness with a precision that unnerved Alexa. They didn't hesitate. They didn't speak. They knew exactly where they were going.

Amira stayed close, her eyes darting to Alexa every few steps. Neither of them were comfortable with this.

Then—

A low hum. Mechanical. Getting closer.

"Drones," the scarred woman hissed.

A red glow flickered through the trees.

"No sudden movements," the leader ordered. "Stay low. Don't breathe too hard."

Alexa crouched, muscles tense, pulling Alexandra down with her. The medic was barely conscious, her breath shallow.

The glow brightened. The whirring grew louder.

It was scanning for them.

Alexa's fingers curled into the dirt.

One mistake. One movement. And they were dead.

The drone hovered, its sensor sweeping over the ravine.

Then—

A twig snapped.

Alexandra.

The drone beeped.

A spotlight flared to life.

"Run!" the leader barked.

Gunfire erupted.

They bolted, branches whipping at their faces, the ground uneven beneath their feet. Alexa pushed Alexandra forward, half-carrying her, ignoring the burn in her muscles.

Something exploded behind them. Fire flashed through the trees.

"They're cutting off the exits!" Amira shouted.

Ahead, the scarred woman pulled something from her belt. "Cover your ears."

She hurled it.

Flashbang.

A deafening boom.

Light swallowed the forest.

Alexa's vision blurred, her ears ringing. But she didn't stop running.

A hand grabbed her arm—

The leader.

"This way!"

She had no choice.

She followed.

Their escape had just begun
