Chapter 18 – Tragedy and Unconsciousness

The explosion of the door and Akane's appearance should have stopped the fight, but Seraphine and Lilith's blind fury made them immune to anything but mutual destruction. Lilith's fire serpent still constricted Seraphine, and the vampire, even weakened, fought with all her might. Her red eyes, bloodshot and filled with hatred, were fixed on Lilith, ignoring the chaos around her, the pain of the burns, and Akane's imposing presence.

In a desperate impulse, Seraphine materialized her shadow whip. The idea was clear: use the whip to pull Lilith away, breaking the fire serpent's hold. But, in her blind rage, she miscalculated the trajectory.

The whip cracked in the air, whizzing like an angry serpent, but instead of hitting Lilith, it wrapped around the leg of a solid wooden desk, a few meters from where Gabriel lay, wounded and defenseless. With a violent pull, Seraphine hurled the desk through the air, towards Lilith.

Lilith, realizing the danger, used her flames to propel herself to the side, dodging the desk at the last second. But the object, heavy and uncontrolled, continued its trajectory, following a deadly arc towards… Gabriel.

"NO!" Seraphine screamed, too late.

Time seemed to drag. Gabriel, semi-conscious, feeling the throbbing pain in his leg and the taste of blood in his mouth, saw the desk approaching like a gigantic shadow. He tried to move, to protect himself, but his body didn't respond.

The impact was brutal.

The desk hit Gabriel squarely, with a dull thud that echoed through the ruined room. The sound of breaking wood mixed with the snap of Gabriel's arm bone, a sharp, nauseating sound that made Greta, even accustomed to violence, shudder.

Gabriel was thrown to the side, falling heavily to the ground, now unconscious. His arm, hit directly by the desk, was at an unnatural angle, twisted and broken. The blood from his leg, previously a trickle, now flowed more copiously, mixing with the dust and debris.

Seraphine, freed from the fire serpent (which dissipated when Lilith diverted her attention), saw the scene with horror. Her red eyes widened, and a sharp, animalistic cry escaped her lips.

"GABRIEL!"

She ran towards him, ignoring Lilith, ignoring Akane, ignoring everything except the inert body of the human lying on the ground.

"Get him out of here!" Akane, finally managing to assert herself, shouted to the students, her authoritative voice cutting through the chaos. "Take him to the infirmary! NOW!"

Greta, with tears in her eyes, approached Gabriel, ready to carry him. But Seraphine pushed her away with a snarl.

"Don't touch him!" She hissed, her eyes fixed on Gabriel, her face contorted in a mask of guilt, pain, and… fear. "I… I'll take care of him."

With surprising delicacy, Seraphine knelt down and picked Gabriel up in her arms, his body limp and inert against hers. His blood stained her black dress, a brutal contrast that seemed to symbolize the tragedy that had befallen them.

"I… I'm so sorry…" Seraphine whispered, her words choked with emotion, as she rose with Gabriel in her arms, using her vampire speed and there she goes running towards the infirmary.

Tears streamed down her pale, cold, and icy face, from her undead eyes. Seraphine trembled. "My human, my… love… What have I done!"
