Evelyn stood in the aftermath of destruction, blue flames flickering at her fingertips. The ground was littered with the smoking remains of the creatures, their dark energy evaporating into the night air. Her heart pounded against her ribs. She had done that.
She had unleashed something terrifyingly powerful.
Ronan, still pressing unto his injured side, stared at her in a mixture of awe and something else..fear. Damien, on the other hand, seemed almost pleased, as if he had been expecting this all along.
You should've told me sooner, Evelyn said, her voice uneven.
Damien met her gaze. Would you have believed me?
Before she could answer, Orion stepped forward. His presence alone silenced the tension between them. His piercing eyes studied her, and when he spoke, it was with certainty.
You've only just awakened, Evelyn. Your power is raw, unstable. You need to learn how to control it fast.
She opened her mouth to argue, but then the ground beneath them trembled. A low roar echoed from the distance.
Another threat was coming.
Orion turned sharply toward the brothers. "We need to leave now."
Damien nodded in agreement, shielding his weapon. Ronan was still sluggish, blood soaking through his torn shirt, but he pushed forward. Evelyn felt the weight of the moment settle on her shoulders. There was no turning back now.
They needed answers.
And she was done waiting
They reached an abandoned monastery deep in the forest, hidden beneath thick vines and ancient stones. Inside was dark, Orion used his power to light candles, casting unnatural shadows. It smelled of damp earth, old parchment, and something metallic blood.
Evelyn faced them, her chest rising and falling with uneven breaths. The weight of unanswered questions pressed down on her, thick as the tension in the room. Her voice cut through the silence like a blade.
"No more half-truths. No more secrets. I need to know everything…..now."
Ronan shifted against the wall, his face pale and strained. Damien rolled his shoulders, his usual calm exterior wavering. But it was Orion who finally stepped forward, his gaze locked onto hers.
"The truth is not easy, Evelyn." His voice was steady, but there was something else beneath it….regret.
She crossed her arms. I don't care if it's easy. I care if it's real.
Orion studied her for a moment before sighing. You are not just another vampire. You are a disruption to the natural order of our kind. A force that was never meant to exist. The Council ordered your execution the moment you were born. But your father…. his voice hesitated for the first time, …he sacrificed everything to hide you.
Evelyn swallowed the lump in her throat. "And you… you were supposed to protect me?"
Orion's expression dimmed. I swore an oath to your father. But I failed. I wasn't there when….
Damien interrupted him, pinching the bridge of his nose. Your birth changed everything. The moment you took your first breath, the fate of vampires, humans, and creatures beyond either race shifted.
She frowned. How?
Ronan, who had been quiet until now, let out a bitter chuckle. Because, Evelyn… you are the prophecy.
She froze.
All her life, she had felt different. Haunted by nightmares that felt too real. Drawn to shadows she didn't understand. And now….this?
A prophecy?
Evelyn pacing around. "And what exactly does this prophecy say?"
Orion looking out the window. "It says you have the power to change everything. To bring salvation… or destruction."
Destruction? This time, it dawned on her it is a serious issue
She swallowed hard, her mind racing. She had always feared losing control. Now, she understood why.
They tried to kill me, she whispered.
Damien trying to hold her hand. "Not just them. The entire Council."
Evelyn looked at him with anger in her eyes and moved backward.
She had always known she was different. But never had she imagined she was a mistake the world had been trying to erase.
A mistake that could destroy everything….
A loud crash interrupted them, something or someone had followed them.
The door burst open with an explosion of force. A hooded figure stepped inside, the air thick with the scent of death. His face remained hidden, but the energy rolling off him sent shivers down Evelyn's spine.
Orion's muscles tensed. Damien's hand moved to his weapon. Ronan tried to stand but staggered, still weak.
Then, the figure spoke. "You cannot escape fate."
His voice was like a storm-deep, commanding, suffocating.
Evelyn's blood turned cold.
The hooded man turned to Ronan, his presence suffocating, his voice cold.
"Tell her."
Ronan's grip on his wound tightened, his knuckles white.
Evelyn felt a sharp pain of dread. "Tell me what?"
Damien's stance shifted, his entire body going rigid. "Don't."
But Ronan had had enough. His looked at Evelyn, and for the first time, he saw real pain there.
It's about your mother, Evelyn.
Evelyn gazed in confusion..
"My mother?" she echoed, her voice barely a whisper.
Orion's expression tensed, his hand subtly reaching for his blade. Evelyn noticed.
Why was he tense?
"What about her?"
The hooded man and her uncle spoke at the same time. Their voices voice was grim, gazes unreadable. "She's alive."
Evelyn's heart stopped. The world around her seemed to slow.
No. That was impossible.
"She died when I was a baby," she said, shaking her head. "I…I saw pictures. I know where she's buried"
"They lied," Ronan cut in, his voice hoarse.
Evelyn took a step back, her mind racing.
Alive.
The word kept echoing in her head, clashing violently with everything she had ever known.
Ronan exhaled shakily. "She's been held captive, Evelyn. And not by humans. Not even by vampires."
Evelyn's breath turned shallow. What?
Damien's expression was unreadable, but his fingers trembled at his side, as if suppressing the urge to reach for her.
Who has her? Evelyn demanded.
The hooded man's gaze glimmer with something she couldn't decipher.
"The ones who want you dead."
Silence.
Evelyn's pulse thundered in her ears.
"They've been using her to control the prophecy," Ronan continued, his voice filled with quiet rage. "Keeping her hidden. Making sure you never found out."
Her voice shaking. "Why?"
The hooded man took a step closer. "Because she is the key to controlling you."
Evelyn's vision blurred for a moment. The flames inside her flare, burning too hot, too fast.
If her mother was alive…
If they had kept her locked away all these years…
Then everything she thought she knew was a lie.
And someone was going to pay for it.
