Chapter 030: Reunion with the Tree Tribe

Engrossed in harvesting rice, Roach meticulously picked each ear of grain, fearing the loss of even a single seed, for they embodied his hope for the future. In about half an hour, he had gathered the seeds from all two hundred or so plants in this forbidden land. Each plant bore clusters of ears, each containing roughly five hundred grains. Given the size of these grains, slightly larger than usual, he filled two snake-skin bags weighing around 132 pounds.

As he gazed upon his day's work, Roach reflected on the ambitions of Yuan, the agricultural pioneer who had dreamed of creating rice plants taller than a man, taking advantage of their "height privilege" to produce abundantly. Fortunately, the rice Roach found was indeed towering, its height unparalleled due to the pristine environmental conditions and fertile soil—luxuries that the over-cultivated fields of his previous life could not offer without chemical fertilizers.

Content with his haul, Roach loaded the bags onto his canoe, ready to head home and begin his era of farming. However, as he started paddling away, his vessel was suddenly surrounded by the people of the Ling Tribe. Intrigued by the canoe's capability to carry not just a person but also goods, they marveled at this "magical device," examining its structure with a curiosity reminiscent of museum-goers.

"What are you doing?" Roach exclaimed, slightly overwhelmed by their eager inspection, which rocked the boat uncomfortably. Although their curiosity was benign, maintaining peace was paramount.

Lingcao, noticing Roach's irritation, quickly intervened, halting further examination. She used gestures to inquire if Roach could teach them how to construct such a craft.

Seeing their earnest interest and considering the simplicity of his canoe, akin to making a lantern with branches and a waterproof hide, Roach was inclined to assist. However, realizing the challenge of procuring large enough hides for their needs, he suggested using their logs tied together with reeds to create rafts instead.

Upon demonstration, the raft made from bundled logs proved buoyant and stable under Lingcao's weight, igniting excitement among the tribespeople about the potential ease and utility of such rafts. Though the initial model was small, Lingcao envisioned a rapid proliferation of raft-making in her tribe, transforming their harvesting operations on the water.

Grateful for Roach's help, Lingcao invited him to visit their tribe. However, mindful of his responsibilities and the animals awaiting him ashore, Roach politely declined. Nonetheless, Lingcao gifted him a giant water chestnut as a token of goodwill, symbolizing an offer of aid should he face future hardships—a gesture reminiscent of the farewell between Roach and Big Tree.

With his precious cargo of seeds, Roach then made his way back to the plains at the foot of the Octarine Mountains, ready to lay the groundwork for next year's planting.

Meanwhile, at the western base of the Octarine Mountains, Big Tree was distributing wild fruits to his tribe when they spotted Roach. Recognizing him even from a distance due to the orderly procession of the blue deer, Big Tree was filled with relief. Rushing to notify him, he shouted, "Big Tree, Big Tree, it's Roach, over there!"

As Roach prepared for another day of mining, unaware of the approaching reunion, the paths of the two men were about to cross again, setting the stage for a renewed alliance.
