Kael awakened to a faint, reassuring pulsating glow that slowly replaced the horrible darkness of his first awakening. Then opening his eyes, he found himself in a great hall, immensely lit with crystalline light and buzzing faintly with energy. The walls of the chamber scintillated with shifting runes along ancient stone: the faint scent of jasmine tangled with something much older than Kael; probably parchment.
With the glowing cat still clasped in his arms-a stark reminder of what he had inflicted upon himself-Kael lay against the glowing moss while his heart raced, trying to grasp this new reality surrounding him. Somewhere in the distance, a gentle voice stirred in the stillness.
"Welcome back, Kael," came the voice. Startled, he turned to behold a tall figure emerge from behind a moonlit column bearing celestial carvings. The newcomer was a woman made young enough to be a daughter to some; her beauty was striking: eyes that reflected the midnight sky, and hair tumbling in silver waves. She had a presence that was at once both compelling and comforting.
"Who… who are you?" he asked, full of wonder and dread, his trembling voice finally spilling out.
"My name is Liora," said she, calm yet authoritive in her modulation. "I have been entrusted with guiding those newly awakened in the mysteries of Elyndria." Then she offered another smile, the warmth of which sparkled enigmas of friendship and trials.
Kael's furrowed brow tried to knit what little he could understand from her words. "Guiding… awakened? I am still trying to figure out what happened to me, though. I was… I was just a high school student, and now… now I'm here. What does it mean to be awakened?"
Liora stepped closer, her eyes betraying an intelligence uncharacteristic of her youthful appearance. "It means you have surpassed the boundaries of your old life, Kael. Elyndria is a realm of magic and possibility, where every decision, every act of kindness, is infused with power. You possess the rare gift of channeling magic through your mind. Here, power has less to do with brute force than with the wisdom with which you exert your will upon the forces of magic."
She gestured toward a series of glowing glyphs that floated in mid-air. "These runes represent the fundamental attributes of magic. You will eventually learn how to assign, adjust, and combine them for spells appropriate to each challenge. Your strength resides in wise choice-making, thinking several steps ahead of your opponents."
Kael regarded the symbols growing and shifting in the air. "I… I always considered myself more of a thinker than a fighter. But how is thinking enough when contending against the dark forces that threaten this world?"
Liora's smile deepened with quiet conviction. "Brute force may win battles, but it is strategy that wins wars. Even in Elyndria, there are conflicts where brute strength must bow to intelligence. Your mind, Kael, is your greatest weapon.
It will guide you, even when all seems lost."As she spoke, the cat gave a soft purr and leaped onto a nearby pedestal, watching with eyes that sparkled as if it understood every word. Kael felt comfort in the presence of the creature a reminder of how the fates of all beings really are intertwined in that realm.
"Before you travel," Liora continued, "let's teach you the fundamentals of our arcane arts." He followed her into an arched doorway that opened up into an expansive courtyard illuminated by two moons hanging in a deep violet sky. The architecture of the courtyard was an entirely seamless blend of nature and magic, with towering trees having soft glowing leaves, crystalline structures intertwined with vines, and streams that flowed like liquid starlight.
They walked in silence for a few moments until Kael managed to muster enough audacity to make a tentative attempt at small talk. "Liora, why do you help me? What's in it for you for leading someone like me?"
Her eyes locked on his, and for a heartbeat, the action had brought stillness to the world. "Because I, too, once lost—adrift between despair and hope. Elyndria chose me to be a guardian and, in time, you will see that every soul in this realm gets a purpose. Helping you is not simply a duty; it is a chance to mend a part of a broken tapestry. Your journey is intertwined with the fate of many, mine included."
They passed under a wide arch and onto a circular platform inscribed with intricate patterns on the ground. Now that they were inside, Liora gestured to Kael to take a seat on a stone bench that stood at its center. "This is the Nexus of Insight," she said. "Herein you will have your first lessons in magical theory and art of strategic attribution."
An array of translucent screens materialised around them, each of which displayed a series of whirling symbols and diagrams-one that expounded the principles on which were based the magic of Elyndria. With an intonation made in both patient and passionate notes, Liora began to expound.
"In Elyndria, magic is not a random force of nature. Rather, it is the intentional manipulation of earth, air, fire, and water... every spell is woven from a web of properties: waters calmness, fire's flicker, earth's heaviness, or air's formlessness... and much more; deeper and rarer properties are present that can be activated only by a mind sharp like yours."
Kael listened with rapt attention, his eyes widening as the screens shifted again and morfed with examples of spells being put to work. "So what I choose determines what spells I make?"
"Exactly," Liora said. "Think of each property as a note in a symphony. The most beautiful of notes can die a horrible death out of tune and time with one another. When ordered well, however, they create a symphony worth listening to. Your job is to find the melody in the chaos of magic, concoct your spells with both reason and intuition, and own them."
The lessons continued under a mixture of exuberant conversation and practical demonstrations. At one point, Liora set him the challenge of creating a low-level water spell using a set of glowing runes. "Concentrate Kael. Focus your mind. What do you perceive from seeing this stream of water? Is it its fluidity, perhaps its resoluteness, or might it even be adaptability?"
Kael closed his eyes and focused. "I feel... calm determination," he murmured, extending his thought. Blue light flickered just barely with his fingertips as the water curled softly in rhythm with his thought.
"Very good," said Liora, encouragement in her tone. "That is the start of the awareness of your power. Every spell you are casting is a conversation between your mind and the very weave of Elyndria. Therefore, listen closely and trust your instincts."
As the hours dragged on, the twin moons hung higher and higher in the sky, painting the courtyard with spectral shadows. Lessons yielded to a quieter, deeper time. A small distance from the fountain at which he sat, he was eased in his thinking by the soft gurgling sounds of waters flowing down. He looked down at the glowing cat wrapped around his feet and whispered, "I would have never thought that saving you would bring me here… to a world full of fascination and responsibility."
The cat blinked slowly, its warm, knowing eyes seeming to validate the truth he dared not speak.
Liora did approach him again after a while, lost in thought in her expression. "Kael," she began slowly, "I feel something of hesitation inside you. It's only normal and understandable for someone from such a different world to question their standing in this animal of a different kind place of reality. But every little step and lesson learned is going to help you discover the strength hidden, waiting, within your mind and heart."
He looked up at her, the eyes earnest. "I want to be really strong, Liora. Not just for myself, but for all those who depend on me. But sometimes, I wonder if my intellect alone can protect me when darkness comes knocking."
Liora stretched forth and set her hand gently upon his. "Strength is built not by itself alone. It embraces those bonds which are built around the trust of another. It will be forged with all the knowledge gained through every trial you've faced. In the end, you will meet people whose destinies intertwine with yours-these will be your comrades, and some will even be your mentors, while others might remain your rivals. But every one of these will disclose a dimension, a part of your strength that you've never known."
Her words sincere, complete, and resonating well within him. "I...I think I understand," came the meek response of Kael. "It's not about learning spells and wielding power. It is about understanding myself and how I can make a difference."
"I think that's the true journey of any mage in Elyndria, Kael," Liora said. "Today, you've taken your first step on the arcane path. It might be that tomorrow's challenges would come harder, along with the choices that have to be made. But this much, you should always know-you're never alone. The world has a way of bringing together what needs to be integrated."
In the dark of night, the Nexus of Insight faded away, leaving Kael with a sense of quiet determination. His prosaic previous life, the one that consisted of routine and passing moments, was only an introduction to this great adventure. The evening had taught lessons which would lead toward the future of strategy and heart coming together to create something extraordinary.
Accompanied by the soft purr of his companion and the echoing parting words of Liora, Kael resolved to undertake his future, however treacherous it may prove. Indeed, in that magic-heavy silence of Elyndria, the self-exploration journey began just now.
