Chapter 13: The Web of Deceit
Emily's mind reeled as she tried to process Ben's revelation. Partners in crime? Her mother?
She felt like she'd been living in a dream world, and Ben's words had shattered the illusion.
"What do you mean?" Emily asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Ben hesitated, as if unsure how much to reveal. "Your mother and my family were involved in a massive embezzlement scheme. They stole millions of dollars from investors."
Emily's eyes widened in horror. "And you're telling me my mother was a part of it?"
Ben nodded. "I'm afraid so. She was deeply involved."
Emily felt like she'd been punched in the gut. She couldn't believe her mother had been capable of such a thing.
But as she looked at Ben, she saw the sincerity in his eyes. He was telling the truth.
"Why are you telling me this?" Emily asked, her voice laced with emotion.
Ben took a step closer. "Because I want you to know the truth. And I want to help you uncover the rest of the secrets."
Emily's heart skipped a beat. She wasn't sure if she could trust Ben, but a part of her wanted to believe him.
As she looked into his eyes, Emily saw something there that gave her hope. Maybe, just maybe, she could trust him.
But as she nodded, a noise outside caught her attention. Footsteps. Heavy, deliberate footsteps.
Ben's eyes locked onto hers. "We need to get out of here. Now."
