chapter 28

Chapter 28: The Unexpected Arrival

Emily's heart was still racing from the faint noise she had heard outside. She and her father had been waiting in silence, wondering if someone was approaching the safe house.

Just as they were starting to relax, Emily heard the sound of footsteps again. This time, they were louder and more confident.

Emily's father stood up, his eyes locked on the door. "Get behind me, Emily," he whispered.

But before Emily could move, the door burst open and Ben walked in. He looked relieved to see Emily and her father safe and sound.

"Thank goodness you're okay," Ben said, rushing over to Emily. "I was worried sick about you."

Emily felt a surge of emotions as Ben hugged her tightly. She had been so focused on the danger they were in that she hadn't realized how much she had missed Ben.

"I'm sorry I didn't get here sooner," Ben said, pulling back to look at Emily. "I had to take a detour to avoid the Wrights' goons."

Emily's father nodded, his expression serious. "We appreciate you getting here safely, Ben. We need to talk about what's next."

Ben nodded, his eyes locked on Emily's father. "I'm all ears. What's the plan?"

As they sat down to discuss their next move, Emily felt a sense of relief wash over her. She was grateful to have Ben by her side, and she knew that together, they could face whatever dangers lay ahead.

But just as they were starting to formulate a plan, Emily's phone rang. It was an unknown number, and Emily's heart skipped a beat as she hesitated to answer it.

"Let it go to voicemail," Ben said, his eyes locked on Emily's phone.

But Emily's curiosity got the better of her. She answered the call, her heart pounding in her chest.

"Hello?" Emily said, her voice cautious.

There was a pause on the other end of the line, and for a moment, Emily thought the caller had hung up.

But then, a low, menacing voice spoke. "Emily, you're running out of time. Meet me at the old warehouse at midnight if you want to see your father alive again."

Emily's eyes widened in horror as she realized who was on the other end of the line. It was Victor Wright.
