Chapter 16: Complicated Feelings

The days following Zayn's confession lingered like a weight on Lira's chest. She couldn't seem to escape the overwhelming mixture of curiosity and confusion swirling in her mind. Her interactions with Zayn had shifted subtly, but the tension was undeniable. He still maintained that cool, collected demeanor, but there was something in the way he looked at her that made her feel both drawn in and unsure.

It wasn't just Zayn who was occupying her thoughts; Mara's behavior had been… different. Lira had caught Mara stealing glances at Zayn during class, a look in her eyes that was hard to ignore. And yet, Mara had never openly admitted anything about how she felt, which only added to Lira's confusion. Why did it feel like she was being caught in a triangle she didn't even want to be part of?

At lunch one day, the group was sitting together, but the air felt charged with something unspoken. Zayn was leaning back in his chair, arms crossed, his gaze fixed on the window, seemingly lost in his thoughts. Mara, on the other hand, was overly animated, laughing too loudly at Jace's jokes. Lira tried to focus on the conversation, but her mind kept drifting.

Jace leaned forward, noticing her distracted expression. "Lira, you've been quiet. Is everything okay?"

Lira blinked, coming back to the moment. She hesitated for a second before answering, trying to maintain a casual tone. "Yeah, I'm just thinking about the project. It's a lot to keep track of."

Mara immediately chimed in, her voice bright but tinged with something else. "I'm just thinking about how the project is going to work out. You know, with the skit and all. I'm still not sure what role we're all supposed to play."

"I think we've decided," Jace interjected, "You and I are doing the dramatic scene, and Lira and Zayn are doing the comedic one. That's the plan, right?"

Lira's gaze shot to Zayn, who had been unusually quiet. He nodded but didn't speak. There was something about the way he looked at her that made her stomach flutter, even though she didn't know exactly why.

"I guess," Lira said, her voice quieter than usual. "But I still don't know how we're going to make it work."

"Don't worry about it," Jace said, giving her a reassuring grin. "We'll make it happen. We've got time."

But time felt like it was slipping away. The project deadline was creeping up, and yet, Lira couldn't shake the sense that she was stuck in a tangled web of emotions. Every moment with Zayn felt like a push and pull, a constant battle between wanting to get closer to him and knowing that there were things about him that didn't add up.

As the conversation continued, Mara's laughter was a little too forced, and her eyes flickered between Zayn and Lira as if she were trying to gauge something. Lira noticed it but chose not to say anything. Instead, she focused on the conversation, trying to ignore the discomfort building in her chest. Was she imagining things? Was Mara jealous?

The rest of the lunch passed in a blur, and by the time the bell rang, Lira was more confused than ever
