Her stomach twisted. This was a nightmare.

A knock at her hotel room door snapped her out of her panic. She opened it to find Adrian leaning against the frame, coffee in one hand, phone in the other. He looked maddeningly relaxed, as if the entire world hadn't just decided they were an item.

"Rise and shine, sweetheart," he said, handing her the coffee. "We've got work to do."

She snatched the cup from him, scowling. "Work? You mean more pretending?"

He grinned. "Exactly."

She groaned, stepping aside to let him in. "I still don't see why we're doing this."

Adrian sank onto the couch, stretching his long legs out. "Because if we don't, the media will keep digging. And trust me, you don't want them digging."

She frowned, uneasy. "Why do you care?"

He was silent for a moment, his expression unreadable. "Because I know what it's like when the press gets too close to something personal."

There was something almost vulnerable in his tone, but before she could press, he smirked. "Besides, you're a journalist. Think of it as an inside look at the media machine."

She folded her arms. "Right. And what exactly does 'playing along' entail?"

"Public outings. A few carefully staged moments." He took a sip of his coffee, then added casually, "Maybe even a kiss or two if necessary."

She nearly choked on her drink. "Excuse me?"

Adrian chuckled. "Relax, Carter. I won't make you fall for me that easily."

Her glare could have burned a hole through him. "Don't hold your breath."

He stood, brushing imaginary dust off his shirt. "We have a dinner reservation tonight. Paparazzi will be all over it. Wear something nice."

Before she could argue, he was already halfway out the door.

"See you at seven," he called over his shoulder.

The door shut behind him, leaving Olivia alone with her thoughts.

This was a disaster.

And the worst part?

A small, treacherous part of her was starting to wonder what it would be like… if it wasn't fake.
