Chapter 16: Running from the Truth

Olivia's hands trembled as she picked up her glass, pretending to take a sip of water while her heart pounded like a drum inside her chest.

Adrian had just sung about her.

Not a generic love song. Not a crowd-pleasing performance.

It was personal. Intimate. Real.

And she wasn't sure she could handle it.

When he returned to the table, the applause was still fading, but Olivia could barely hear it over the rushing in her ears.

He slid into his seat, watching her carefully. "You okay?"

She forced a tight smile. "Nice performance."

Adrian smirked, but there was something softer in his expression. "That's all you have to say?"

"What do you want me to say?" she shot back. "That I'm flattered? That I…" She stopped herself before the words could escape.

Adrian leaned in, his voice quiet but firm. "That you felt something."

Her breath caught.

Because she had.

She had felt everything.

And that was exactly why she had to get out of there.

Olivia pushed her chair back abruptly. "I have to go."

Adrian's smirk disappeared. "Olivia—"

"I can't do this." She grabbed her coat, shaking her head. "Whatever this is, it's not part of the plan."

His jaw tightened. "And what exactly is your plan?"

"To do my job." The lie tasted bitter on her tongue. "To write the article, finish the assignment, and move on."

Adrian stood too, his presence overwhelming. "Is that really what you want?"

She hesitated—just for a second.

And that second was enough.

Adrian saw it.

Something in his expression changed, like he was finally understanding what she had been trying so hard to deny.

But instead of pushing, he stepped back.

"Fine," he said, voice cool. "Run, then."

Olivia's stomach twisted, but she forced herself to turn around and walk away.

Because if she stayed…

She wasn't sure she'd ever be able to leave.
